HALAWA — In a game that featured 1,120 yards of net offense, 106 points, and 15 total touchdowns, top-ranked Saint Louis rallied from an early deficit to pull away from Narbonne (Harbor City, Calif.), in a 56-50 non-league shootout at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

"There are no moral victories, we traveled 3,000 miles and our kids fought a hard game. We had every chance to win the game and there were a couple times we didn't make the plays and they made a few more," said Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas, whose team returned to Hawaii for the first time since 2006 where it played Kahuku.

Narbonne is ranked 16th in the LA Times' Top 25 and has a bye before playing Carson (Calif.), who came down to play Kamehameha back on Aug. 25.

Chevan Cordeiro tossed seven touchdowns and 409 yards on 25-of-40 passing and added 46 rushing yards to lead the Crusaders who improved to 5-0 overall, 2-0 league. He was intercepted twice in the second and third quarters.

"I can't say he was perfect tonight, but he did well in the second half and picked up to get this win," Saint Louis receiver Mitchell Quinn said on his quarterback.

Quinn broke loose to catch touchdown passes for 8, 83, 50, and 8 yards in the fourth quarter to finish with seven catches for 233 yards.

"It feels amazing, especially to be down in the first half. It feels great to come out on top," said Quinn.

His 8-yard score with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter came off of a deflection that proved to be the difference for a 56-44 lead.

"We had a slow start and we need to pick it up earlier so we're not in those tight spaces in the end," said Quinn.

Jalen Chatman, who threw for 516 yards and five scores and added one on the ground, heaved a 76-yard bomb to Steve Jenkins (156 receiving yards), but Edgar Ramos missed the kick to trail, 56-50 with 1:52.

"It was a great experience and competed well. That was a good team so it was our offense to get right. Offensively we have been struggling and this was a big game. We really picked it up and did our jobs but didn't pick up the ‘W'. But to come out here to experience this and bond with the teammates and family so it was fun," said Chatman, who committed to play at Rutgers.

The Crusaders got the ball back and forced the Gauchos to burn two consecutive timeouts. Narbonne held Saint Louis to a third-and-8, but Cordeiro rushed for a 16-yard gain and the Gauchos called their final timeout at 1:19, but could not stop the clock as Saint Louis held on to win.

"We were in the situation to get the ball back and we didn't make the plays and they made more plays than we did," said Douglas.

Saint Louis rolled through Hawaii opponents outscoring them 203 to 20, but were in unfamiliar territory as it trailed for the first time this season after Chatman converted a fourth-and-11 with an 18-yard run that would set up an 11-yard touchdown to Julian Woodard three plays later.

The Crusaders answered back 10 plays later when Cordeiro found Tosh Kekahuna-Kalawe for a 6-yard touchdown and Jacob Tobias' kick tied the game at 7.

Tobias went 8 of 8 on PATs.

Noa Purcell recorded back-to-back tackle for losses, however, Chatman tossed it to Jenkins, who was off to the races for 80 yards, but Edgar Ramos missed the PAT to make it, 13-7.

Narbonne extended the lead 20-7, after Saint Louis punted and Jermar Jefferson ran it in for a 3-yard score.

Saint Louis needed five plays to get into the end zone after Chance Beyer caught a 22-yard pass that would set up his 1-yard receiving touchdown. Chatman's pass was deflected and Jordan Botelho returned it 25 yards to the house and Tobias' PAT gave the Crusaders the lead, 21-20.

The Gauchos responded six plays later after Chatman tossed a 37-yard strike to Jefferson to put Narbonne back up, 27-21 with 3:54 remaining.

Ramos added a 29-yard field goal just before halftime for a 30-21 lead.

Demontii Peoples intercepted Cordeiro and the Gauchos turned it into points six plays later after Chatman's 6-yard run.

Cordeiro's 42-yard pass to Quinn would help set up a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kainalu Reyes-Hackney and five seconds into the fourth quarter, the Crusaders got within two after Cordeiro's 8-yard touchdown to Quinn to make it, 37-35.

"We have to stay disciplined in our routes. First half we ran them sloppy. Second half we executed and we came up on top," said Quinn.

The Gauchos fired back with Chatman's screen to Jefferson that covered 81 yards to put Narbonne up 44-35. Jefferson had 181 yards to go along with 52 rushing yards for the night.

It took the Crusaders 19 seconds to answer with Quinn's 83-yard score and after Narbonne turned it over on downs at the Saint Louis 32, Quinn later reeled in a 50-yard touchdown to give Crusaders their first lead since the second quarter, 49-44.

The Crusaders took a short break from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season and plays Kamehameha on Sept. 29.
