Saint Louis' Quinn, Aiea's Atuatasi lead weekly standouts

Male Athlete of the Week: Mitchell Quinn, Saint Louis football
Mitchell Quinn seized the moment Friday night.

The senior wide receiver caught six passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns — all coming on third downs, no less — in top-ranked Saint Louis' 49-13 rout of No. 4 Punahou at Aloha Stadium.

"He had a super game and the thing about it was, every catch he made, he was well-covered," Crusaders offensive coordinator Ron Lee said. "He had to go up and make the big catch, then he had to out run the inside and break double coverage."

Quinn's first reception resulted in the game's first touchdown, which came short after the Crusaders' defense scored a safety early in the second quarter. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Quinn hauled in the 9-yard scoring strike from quarterback Chevan Cordeiro with 9:11 left in the second quarter on a third-and-goal.

On Saint Louis' next possession, the pair hooked up on consecutive plays that resulted in gains of 15 and 55 yards, the latter coming on third-and-17. The long pass play set-up first-and-goal from the 1 and three plays later, Cordeiro punched it into end zone to extend the lead to 16-0.

Punahou got on the board with a short TD pass with 1:20 left in the second quarter, but Cordeiro hit Koali Nishigaya for a 70-yard pick-up on the first play of Saint Louis' ensuing possession. Three plays later, he found Quinn for a 25-yard TD pass on third-and-20.

"That was huge. To me, that was the play of the game because we could have went into halftime at 21-7, but the fact that we scored was really critical and that catch, again, he was well-covered," Lee said. "It was a great throw and a great catch. Going into halftime that was really big and made a big difference. It comes down to a few plays and that was one of them that helped us win this game because (Punahou) would have had some momentum going in, so that was a huge, huge play."

Quinn added a 30-yard TD catch — on a third-and-6, this time — early in the third quarter for good measure.

In one game, he doubled his total number of receptions (12) and ascended to become the team's leader in receiving yards (233) on the season.

"Mitch hardly played last year, but he gets his reps in practice and so do the other guys, but I think when their number is called, they've got to step up," Lee said. "He works hard in practice and he was probably frustrated that he doesn't get the ball more, but that's all part of the offense and he handles it well. When your number is called, you better do your job. and he did."

The Crusaders were without three of their receivers in Chris Sykes, Makoa Close and Roman Wilson, which opened the door of opportunity for Quinn.

"He's made great catch and he's kind of been doing that all season long, (but) it's just that they don't get to play much. We had the running clock most of the second half in all of our preseason games and we try to get everybody in there, so unfortunately for these guys they didn't get to play much, but this game he had a breakout game," Lee said.

Quinn is coming off a successful track and field season that saw him finish fourth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100 at the state meet. Not surprisingly, Lee said Quinn's best asset is his speed.

"Mitch is so underrated. He's a 10.8 (100-meter dash) guy and he's got great hands and great concentration," said Lee, who has another speedster in his receiving corps in Wilson, last year's state runner-up in the 100.

"I think Mitch and Roman will be the top two guys in the state in the 100; they'll be really, really close. I think Mitch has a bright future in football because of his speed and he's smart, so he knows the offense and he runs great routes and then he makes tough catches."

Quinn and the Crusaders (4-0) will take a reprieve from ILH play this week. They host Narbonne (Harbor City, Calif.) 6 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Female Athlete of the Week: Trinity Atuatasi, Aiea volleyball
It did not take long for Trinity Atuatasi to make an impact on the Aiea girls volleyball team.

Three seasons ago, Atuatasi was selected by her teammates as a freshman captain — for the varsity squad.

"She's the first person we ever named as a captain as a freshman," longtime Aiea coach Blythe Yamamoto said. "I let the kids vote. Ultimately, the coaches have the last say, but she was overwhelmingly chosen by her teammates — and she deserves it. She was the one telling them we had to hustle, that we had to do things; it was a natural fit for her. She was not scared to step up, she knows right from wrong and she will make sure we're on the right path."

Fast forward to Na Alii's 2017 campaign and the now-junior libero is, well, doing the same thing: leading her team.

"Trinity is always just ready to play, and for us, the more she touches the ball, the better we play," Yamamoto said. "We try to make her pass half the court, try to make her dig half the court. She is a special athlete."

Yamamoto has a long-established relationship with Atuatasi, not only doubling as her club coach with the Jammers Volleyball Club, but even a generation before that.

"Her mom (Taumaoe) was on my first Aiea team I coached twenty-plus years ago," Yamamoto said. "There are a lot of similarities with them. They're tough and they're going to go at it. They were both undersize — I think Trinity is maybe 5-3 — but she will battle and she doesn't care if you're 6-3. She will go right at you."

Atuatasi earned First Team All-OIA West honors in her sophomore season and has followed that up with a great start to 2017.

She posted 20 digs and two assists in a three-set win over Radford on Sept. 9.

Atuatasi had 10 digs, one ace and an assist in a two-set win over Waipahu last Monday. Two days later, she served up as astounding eight service aces, along with four digs and two assists in a sweep of Waialua.

"It was kind of unreal. She just was going back and serving bombs," Yamamoto said. "It actually started the day before (in practice). She was getting aces on our coaches. We talked about how we had to serve tougher and she did it and she carried it into that Waialua match."

Yamamoto said that while Atuatasi has continued to improved on the court, her biggest gains have come between the ears.

"From her freshman to her sophomore year she mentally got stronger. It was a lot to handle as a freshman being a captain and being in tight situations and being able to come through at that point," Yamamoto said. "Her sophomore year she was able to do that better. Last year she worked really hard to get physically stronger and more in shape and her feeling that confidence has definitely helped her mental game as well."

Atuatasi helped Na Alii to the Division II state softball title last season. She earned Second Team All-Hawaii honors after batting .346 on the year. In three state tournament games, she batted .625 (5 for 8) with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored.

"She's an athlete," Yamamoto said. "She's very confident, but yet, she's always super humble. After a match, when I tell her ‘great match,' she says ‘I can do better,' so she's still striving to get better."

Atuatasi and Na Alii (5-0) sit atop the OIA West standings. They will host third-place Mililani (4-1) Wednesday before visiting second-place Kapolei (4-0) Monday.
