MAKIKI — Braden Amorozo accounted for four first half scores to lead Waipahu to a 35-8 regular season win over Roosevelt Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

The Marauders, ranked second in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Football Power Rankings, rode a 27-0 halftime lead to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association D2 standings.

Amorozo, a senior quarterback, threw touchdown passes to three different receivers and ran for another score to power Waipahu's victory. He completed 19 of 37 passes for 246 yards against one interception in the win.

Roosevelt suffered its second straight loss and fell to 1-2.

"I felt like we did pretty good, we started off really strong," said Amorozo. "We ended off a little slow, should have made more adjustments, but we came out with the ‘W' and that's all that matters."

Even though the Marauders were without All-Hawaii D2 First Team receiver Isaac Yamashita (shoulder), Amorozo still had plenty of options to choose from as five different players caught a pass.

Alika Ahsing's eight receptions for 75 yards and Matthew Fiesta's five catches for a game-high 86 yards also helped when running back Alfred Failauga suffered a sprained ankle during the first half. Failauga did not play in the second half, finishing with a game-high 45 yards on 10 carries.

"They are all just very selfless players and they all work hard," Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho said on his team's receivers. "With our type of offense we run, nobody knows who's going to get the ball so you better be ready for it when it comes to you."

After forcing a turnover on downs, the Marauders began their first drive of the game on their own 34. The drive ended with Amorozo's 23-yard keeper on fourth down to give Waipahu a 7-0 lead with under 2:59 to go in the first quarter.

"That's like my longest touchdown run I ever had," said Amorozo. "They were biting hard on Alfred, so I was able to pull it and take it to the house with a wide-open field for me to run."

On the Rough Riders' next possession, Uele Palusami recovered a Roosevelt fumble to give Waipahu a short field at the Roosevelt 13. A few plays later Amorozo hit Ahsing on a 1-yard out route to make it a 13-0 game on the final play of the first quarter.

Waipahu got two third down grabs by Fiesta on its next possession, which included a leaping 42-yard TD reception in the left seam to give the Marauders a 19-0 lead midway through the second stanza.

Amorozo capped the first half scoring 11 seconds before the break with a 11-yard TD to Ezekiel-Kai Kapanui-Reyes. The senior quarterback also ran in the try to make it a 27-0 game at the half.

Cody Mercado-Aiona accounted for all of the Marauders' points in the second half with a 4-yard TD run and the ensuing 2-point conversion with just 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Roosevelt senior Shastyn Kekahuna, who did not play in the first half accounted for the Rough Riders' only score of the game with a 23-yard scramble at the 9:45 mark of the final period of play. Tamaki Iijima, who started the game at quarterback, ran in the conversion for the final points of the contest.

Senior cornerback Jared Elwin was a thorn in the Marauders' side with six pass breakups and an interception to lead Roosevelt defensively.

Kekahuna brought life to the Rough Riders' offense in the second half, but he also was picked off twice. Waipahu's Joseph Anae and Fiva Tulafale were responsible for the two Roosevelt interceptions.

Roosevelt hosts Kaimuki next Friday while Waipahu will have its third week off in five weeks.

Although his team came out with the win, Carvalho said the Marauders could have played a much better second half.

"We definitely got exposed to some of the things that we have to work on. We're going to try and use this bye week to fix up things that we today and improve (because) after this bye week, we really get into the hard part of our season."
