Male Athlete of the Week: Joey Cantillo, Kailua baseball
Joey Cantillo both started and ended Kailua's run to a second straight Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball title last week.

The senior pitcher/first baseman played a pivotal part in all three of the Surfriders' win last week in the 12-team Division I league tournament beginning with Thursday's thrilling extra-innings victory over Pearl City.

Cantillo, a 6-foot-4 left-hander, notched his longest outing of the season — 7 2/3 innings — with 10 strikeouts against three walks and four hits. He allowed two runs, just one earned, before reaching the pitch-count limit. Although he did not factor into the pitching decision, Cantillo pushed the game to extra innings with his two-out, two-RBI single to tie it at 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"That was huge," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "To be down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh — I mean, that was huge."

The Surfriders eventually got the game-winning run on a walk-off single by Jalen Ah Yat in the bottom of the 10th inning to secure a state tournament berth.

"We managed to get by that day," Ishigo said. "Joey had to use all his pitches. They weren't the best, he wasn't throwing the hardest, his curve could get over a few times and his mixed in his change-up but it wasn't the best Joey that we've seen all year, but he survived and we got through the day."

Cantillo, who bats third in the lineup, went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored in Friday's 13-3 semifinal win over Mililani in six innings.

Saturday's championship game — another extra-inning affair — was a back-and-forth contest that saw Kailua lose a two-run lead twice. However, with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Cantillo lifted a fly-ball to center for a sacrifice fly that scored Stone Parker from third base for the game-winning run.

"I think everybody believed in him that he would come through for us and I was just hoping that he would do the job for us," Ishigo said. "I was pretty confident in him. He hasn't struck out all year, so I knew he was going to put it in play."

Cantillo batted 3 for 4 and scored a run in the win. In his team's three games last week, he batted .500 (6 for 12) with three RBI, three runs scored and a walk.

"In baseball you cannot choose who you want up to be the hitter in the situation," Ishigo said. "We were just fortunate enough that it was his turn at the plate, but we expect all of our guys to be able to rise to the occasion."

Cantillo's .519 season batting average is tops in the OIA and the third-best mark statewide. He ranks first in the state in hits (27), second in runs batted in (20) and has scored 11 times on the year.

"Joey always could hit since he was young, but I think the muscle he put on helped him offensively this season getting his legs stronger and getting his upper body stronger, but he always had a nice swing and he always could hit for average. Actually, he was an opposite-field guy before," Ishigo said of the four-year varsity member. "He would have hit in years past, but we just had so many upperclassmen that last year was the first time, as a junior, that I would throw him out there regularly to hit."

As good as Cantillo has been at the plate, he has been even better on the mound this season, where he is 5-0 with a 1.26 ERA. In 39 innings of work, he has allowed just seven earned runs on 19 hits with 65 strikeouts against 29 walks.

"There's so many different Joey's; He can beat you with his accuracy, he can beat you with velocity, he can beat you with the curveball — and if he doesn't have any of them he can still beat you with his will alone," Ishigo said. "He's a competitor and he doesn't like to lose at all."

Cantillo's competitiveness is only overshadowed by his work ethic.

"He's an extremely hard worker and he's confident in what he does because of the work he does," Ishigo said of the University of Kentucky-signee. "He believes in the process and goes through it to a T. He works hard in the weight room and he just does everything as hard as everybody can ask for."

It was Kailua's second straight OIA championship and 14th overall.

Cantillo and the Surfriders (13-2), who have won their last nine games and vaulted three spots in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings to No. 4, will have a first-round bye in next week's Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships at Les Murakami Stadium.

Female Athlete of the Week: Jaeda Cabunoc, Roosevelt softball
Needless to say, Jaeda Cabunoc has been a most welcomed addition to the Roosevelt softball team.

The sophomore pitcher proved her worth yet again last week in a pair of key wins to end the regular season. Cabunoc, a Mid-Pacific transfer, recorded a pair of complete games to help the Rough Riders improve to 10-2 and clinch the Eastern Division's top seed and a first-round bye in this week's Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament.

In Thursday's 11-2 rout of Farrington, Cabunoc gave up one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. She also went 1 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored as Roosevelt rapped out 17 hits in the win.

Cabunoc parlayed that effort into another standout performance in Saturday's 9-1 win over Kaiser. She scattered five hits with two strikeouts and two walks and batted 1 for 2 with a walk. Cabunoc drove in a run and scored another in the win. The lone run she gave up was unearned.

"She pitched well and the defense helped her out a lot," Roosevelt coach Clay Okamura said.

After giving up a pair of runs in the first couple of innings against the Govs, Cabunoc settled down the rest of the way Thursday.

"When she got hit the defense made some great plays and then she did her share and she struck out a few here and there and some some nice pitches and it just jelled," Okamura said.

Cabunoc, a 5-foot-4 right-hander, is 4-0 on the year with an ERA of 1.78. In all four of her wins, she has gone at least 6 2/3 innings, and has gone the distance three times this year.

However, she didn't play until the fifth game of the regular season after suffering a fractured wrist during a preseason tournament.

"She was in a cast and she couldn't throw the ball so she was out four weeks," said Okamura, who noted that Cabunoc still participated in the conditioning portion of practices despite the injury."

Okamura added that Cabunoc's teammates supported her during her rehabilitation.

"It's hard to explain, they just all get along and that's something that they instilled. You can't teach that, you can't force it on them," Okamura said. "This group of young ladies just seem to have each other's backs and there's a trust in each other. They all help each other and they all work well with each other. It's very encouraging to see. They're great kids and have great attitudes."

With Cabunoc's addition, the Rough Riders have the luxury of two experienced pitchers — the other being junior Mari Foster, their staff ace the past two seasons.

"It's more like a blessing, actually," Okamura said.

The result has been a seamless transition for Cabunoc.

"I think the team has a lot to do with it," Okamura said. "The girls are always positive with her and I think she's comfortable with her surroundings, so that helps a lot."

Since a 1-2 start to the season, Roosevelt has reeled off nine straight wins and is the lone D1 team in the OIA to reach double-digit wins thus far.

Cabunoc and the Rough Riders (10-2) moved into this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings at No. 10 and will play the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between Farrington and No. 5 Leilehua at 3 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal at Stevenson Middle School.

The winner secures one of the OIA's six berths into next month's DataHouse/HHSAA Division I State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The semifinals and title game of the OIA tournament will take place Friday and Saturday, respectively, at McKinley.
