Iolani's Ichimura, Kailua's Cummings-Lani lead weekly honorees

Male Athlete of the Week: Trevor Ichimura, Iolani baseball
When his Iolani baseball team needed a win to extend its season, Trevor Ichimura delivered his best.

Ichimura, a junior pitcher, turned in a lights-out performance to lead the Raiders to a 4-0 win over then-No. 9 Mid-Pacific Friday afternoon in a play-in game of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I tournament at Ala Wai Field. He delivered a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

"Trevor was very sharp, he got ahead a lot and stayed ahead. He had very good command," Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said. "It was the best I've ever seen him. I want to say that he had everything working Friday."

The 6-foot-1 Ichimura, who improved to 3-1 on the season with the win, was incredibly efficient. He threw just 69 pitches and faced only one batter over the minimum. The right-hander limited the Owls to just two base runners for the game and only once got to a three-ball count to a batter.

"He can be overpowering at times, but I think his strength is his command," Miyahira said. "He's always in the zone, he's always in command, his velocity is there, too, but he's also a really good athlete. He could definitely go out there and play some shortstop. He doesn't hit for us, but to his credit, he's been working on hitting and I can admire something like that."

It was the second time this season that Ichimura went the distance in a shut out. The first instance also came against Mid-Pacific. Ichimura logged a two-hitter with three walks and a strikeout in a 1-0 win over the Owls on March 10.

"I just think every time he goes out there he gets better and better," Miyahira said. "He's been our workhorse, he's been our guy. We rely on him and Logan Yee a lot as our starting pitchers."

Ichimura got more than enough run support — including a pair of solo home runs off the bat of Micah Yonamine — to keep the Raiders' season alive, while the five-time defending league champion Owls were sent packing for the offseason.

"He knew it was a must-win for our team and he put the team on his back and said follow him. He wasn't afraid of the moment. He embraced the moment, embraced the challenge that if we don't do it, we go home," Miyahira said. "He's kind of a bulldog. He doesn't say much, he's not a rah-rah guy, but he just goes out there and takes care of business."

As a sophomore Ichimura was thrust into the role of staff ace. He compiled a 3-3 record with a 5.41 ERA, with 52 hits in 37 2/3 innings. Ichimura allowed 42 runs — 29 of them earned — with 10 strikeouts and 13 walks.

Ichimura's progress can be traced to the work he put in over the offseason, his coach said.

"This year he was at every offseason workout and he's just evolved into an awesome teammate and a leader, in a quiet way," Miyahira said. "Trevor is definitely not a vocal leader — Logan is more of a vocal leader — but Trevor leads by example and gets it done. I can't tell you impressed I am with him this year as far as being a supportive teammate."

Iolani went on to drop a 3-2 game to No. 1 Kamehameha Saturday to fall into the losers' bracket and was eliminated with a 3-1 defeat at sixth-ranked Punahou Tuesday.

Ichimura started the game and allowed six hits with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings. He was the saddled with the loss to end the season with a 3-2 record with one save and an ERA of 2.43. In 46 innings pitched, Ichimura surrendered 38 hits with 25 strikeouts against 11 walks.

The Raiders, who moved into the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings for the first time this season at No. 10, finished the year with a mark of 6-12.

Female Athlete of the Week: Dyani Cummings-Lani, Kailua softball
What a week it was for Dyani Cummings-Lani and the Kailua softball team.

The junior batted a combined 5 for 9 with six runs batted in and was the pitcher of record in each of the Surfriders' three wins over a span of five days last week.

Kailua notched victories over Farrington (13-3, 5 innings), Moanalua (5-0), and Kaiser (14-0, 6 innings) to put together its first three-game win streak of the season.

Cummings-Lani, a 5-foot-5 right-hander, was in the middle of most of the action.

She tossed a one-hitter with two strikeouts and a walk and belted a three-run double in last Tuesday's win over the Governors. Cummings-Lani also walked and scored a run in the game.

"She's been hitting her spots and she's been more focused, she's believing in herself and that carries a lot when she has that confidence," Surfriders' coach Tamara Kaluau said. "I think right now she's peaking when she needs to be. The confidence in her hitting transfers over to her pitching. She's playing well, with a lot of confidence."

Cummings-Lani gave up a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Farrington struck for three runs, but she buckled down the rest of the way.

"That was her struggle. Usually she'd walk a batter and that would lead to a run for the opponent, but she totally took care of that Tuesday and the other part is her teammates were playing good defense behind her."

The win over the Govs — who were riding a season-best two-game win streak — also helped erase the memory of Kailua's 7-4 loss to Roosevelt 10 days earlier.

"It was a big win," Kaluau said. "If we draw the (No.) 1 or 2 seed, we get the bye, but I think a lot of the girls just play with a one-game-at-a-time concept and are more focusing on us improving every game on the things we need to work on, but we do preach to them bigger picture and prepping for the playoffs, so it was a big win."

As good as she was Tuesday, Cummings-Lani was even better in Thursday's 5-0 win over Moanalua. She struck out seven and walked just one in a complete-game three-hitter.

It was a complete turn-around from the first time the Surfriders played Na Menehune this season, when Cummings-Lani was tagged for 11 runs on nine hits in three innings in an 11-5 loss.

"She did a good job of getting ahead in the count and working that inside pitch," Kaluau said. "We thought that if she could keep it inside tight and down, then we should see a lot more ground balls to the right side and I think she understood that. She throws pretty hard and she's got a natural bend on the ball."

Cummings-Lani, who bats clean-up, went 1 for 1 at the plate with a walk.

She closed out the week with another solid two-way effort in Saturday's 14-0 rout of Kaiser.

Cummings-Lani tossed a two-hitter with one walk and batted 2 for 5. She put an exclamation point on the game with her three-run home run in the top of the sixth innings.

"She's been consistent and hitting in every game and hitting with a lot of power," Kaluau said. "She's been doing a tremendous job. That 3-run home run she hit, she fouled off a bunch of pitches before that. It was a great at bat."

Cummings-Lani, a third-year starter for the Surfriders, is 5-2 on the year with a 2.73 ERA. In 41 innings pitched, she has allowed 28 hits with 25 strikeouts against 16 walks.

"Her understanding of the game has come a long way," Kaluau said. "She's really improved on her knowledge and understanding what the role of the pitcher is, because she's not a natural pitcher. She had to take the lead and be our pitcher since her freshman year, so she's grown a lot and bought into it and it's all coming into play now. She's proving herself as a leader and as well as a complete player and she's continuing to grow."

Cummings-Lani and the Surfriders (8-3) wrap up the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East season against Kalaheo Thursday.
