MILILANI — Shannon Pascua-Stanton's RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Maya Yoshiura and gave No. 5 Mililani an 8-7 walk-off win over third-ranked Leilehua Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans squandered a five-run lead and fell behind by a run twice — in both the seventh and eighth innings — only to come back to tie it both times. They improved to 8-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West with their fifth consecutive win.

Pascua-Stanton, a senior first baseman, came through with a pair of clutch hits late in the game. She sent the game into extra innings with her leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it at 6, and won it three innings later with another timely hit.

Maya Yoshiura hit a seeing-eye single to center field with one out. After Mules' reliever Alyssa Abe got Merilis Rivera to line out to right, Markie Okamoto blooped an 0-2 pitch just beyond first base to put runners at the corners for Pascua-Stanton.

Pascua-Stanton, a lefty, pulled the first pitch of the at-bat from Abe into right field to score Yoshiura and end the nearly three-hour game.

"I knew I had a runner at third so I just had to put it some place and I just tapped the ball and I got it," said Pascua-Stanton, who was able to overcome some nerves to come through for her team.

"Throughout the season I have been nervous, but I learned how to calm myself down and just wing it," she said.

Pascua-Stanton scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth. She worked a 13-pitch walk to lead off, moved to second on a Taylor Schmerbauch sacrifice bunt, took third on Jerae Keliikoa's single and scored on an error.

The Mules were held scoreless and limited to just four hits through the first six innings, but batted around in the seventh, when they posted five hits and benefitted from a walk.

Leilehua cut the deficit to 5-3 on pinch-hitter Kawena Kahana-Travis' three-run home run to left-center and took its first lead three batters later, on Kamryn Kamakaiwi's three-run homer to straightaway center. Both home runs came with two outs in the inning.

However, Pascua-Stanton evened the score with a solo homer on the very first pitch of the bottom of the seventh.

"I just said (to myself), ‘small ball,' and it just went over," Pascua-Stanton said. "I felt like (Leilehua) thought it was done and the game was over, so me, as a senior, I thought I'd step up to the plate and make it happen."

Antonio was happy to see Pascua-Stanton, who entered Thursday with a batting average of .143 (4 for 28) entering Thursday, have some success at the plate.

"She came up with those timely hits and she's seeing the ball and she made some kind of adjustment and she got that home run and that (game-winning) base hit," Antonio said.

Mililani got the potential winning run in scoring position in the form of Katie Carlos, who reached with a one-out double, but Leilehua pitcher Kaena Nistal struck out Keliikoa and Maya Saneishi to send it into extra innings.

The Mules reclaimed the lead with the benefit of a pair of Mililani errors in the top of the eighth only to see the hosts again tie in the bottom of the frame.

Tarah Aniya led off the Mililani eighth with a walk and advanced to second on Yoshiura's sac bunt. One pitch later, Merilis Rivera singled up the middle to bring in Aniya to knot it at 8.

The Mules got the leadoff man aboard in the top of the 10th in Kayla Hale and moved her into scoring position at second following a sac bunt by Brandi Leong, but stranded her there.

Yoshiura batted 4 for 5 with three runs scored. She belted a two-run home run that was part of a three-run sixth inning. Okamoto was 3 for 6 and Rivera, Keliikoa and Pascua-Stanton all paired hits for the Trojans, who rapped out a season-high 16 hits.

"It was a great team effort. This is a great team win," Antonio said. "We need everybody and that's the bottom line. We need the whole team to win ball games."

Misha Carreira was the winning pitcher after going the distance. She was charged with seven runs — six of them earned — on nine hits with seven strikeouts against five walks.

Antonio credited her senior ace for bouncing back from what could have been a devastating sixth inning.

"She probably just flushed it and just moved forward, on to the next batter or the next pitch and I think she really settled down after that."

Nistal gave up seven runs on 13 hits with nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of work. She walked three batters before giving way to Abe, who surrended three hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings of relief, and took the loss.

Leong batted 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored from her leadoff spot. Seven different Mules registered a least one hit and six different players scored a run.

Each teams left 11 runners on base — nine of them in scoring position.

Leilehua left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and Mililani returned the favor in the bottom of the fifth.

The teams also combined for nine errors — five of them by the Trojans.

With the win, Mililani avenged a 6-4 loss to Leilehua on March 10 and remain a half-game behind first-place Campbell (8-1) in the D1 West standings.

"We told ourselves that we weren't going to lose to Leilehua again and we proved pretty much everybody wrong and the rest of the season is going to be a great season," Pascua-Stanton said.

The Mules fell to 6-4 and remain in fourth place. It was their second extra-inning loss this season.

Both teams have two regular-season games remaining before the 12-team OIA tournament.
