Leilehua's Nistal, Waianae's Chong top weekly standouts

Female Athlete of the Week: Kaena Nistal, Leilehua softball
Kaena Nistal has learned to take nothing for granted.

The Leilehua junior pitcher has followed the lead of her coach and it's paid dividends for her this season.

Nistal led the Mules to pair of pivotal wins over Kapolei and Nanakuli last week. The 5-foot-5 right-hander went the distance in both games to help her team improve to 4-2 in the ultra-competitive Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West standings.

In Tuesday's 3-1 win over the then seventh-ranked Hurricanes, Nistal struck out eight, walked one and scattered five hits.

"Kapolei's field is kind of different because their pitcher's mound is higher than the plate, so you kind of have to pitch downhill," Leilehua coach Stacy Araki said. "She's been working hard to keep the ball low in the first place, but I think it was exception that she was able to overcome that and even if she kept it high, she did well."

Nistal followed up that performance with another solid outing in a 9-3 win over the Golden Hawks Saturday morning. Only one of the three runs she surrendered were earned. Nistal allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter in another complete-game victory.

"She's been very crafty with the bigger bats and then there's some batters that she just overpowered," Araki said. "She's working really hard this year."

Nistal has pitched in every game this season and is 4-2 with an ERA of 1.63, which ranks fifth in the OIA. Her 38 2/3 innings pitched is the second most in the league. She has posted 34 strikeouts — third in the OIA — against eight walks this year.

"I think she's more focused than last year. I would say she's more mature," Araki said. "She's kind of buckling down and trying to really hit her spots. She's starting to trust me and trust herself that she can throw it."

The trust-building has been a two-way street for Nistal and Araki.

"All season I've been telling the girls that if they're not feeling that day to just let me know and it's not a bad thing if you want someone to hit for you or play for you, because I know how it is. Sometimes you just have bad days and nothing works," Araki said. "So this past Nanakuli game she came up to me and asked if I could have someone else hit for her because she wasn't feeling like she could hit that day. We're trying to make them selfless and it's working so far."

Araki said that Nistal's growth has come in the mental part of the game as much as it has the physical portion.

"I think it's that maturity that makes her better this year," Araki said. "Last year she would get hit and her emotions were just high and low and I kept telling that she had to keep it level and that she couldn't get too excited and she can't get too down on herself if she misses with a pitch or they hit the ball, or hit a home run. She just has to be level-headed and she's been doing a good job of that this year."

Despite coming back for her second varsity season, Nistal wasn't assured a starting spot, Araki said.

"We always tell the kids that even if you played with us last year, if you don't hustle or you don't play to your potential you're probably not going to be a starter," Araki said. "We had a couple starters coming off the bench already from last year. In the preseason I started benching them early and letting them know that someone is taking your spot and I think that keeps it healthy for them."

Nistal had to battle Maryknoll-transfer Kamryn Kamakaiwi and Alyssa Abe for the role of No. 1 pitcher.

"Everybody wants a starting role and I think that kind of pushed Kaena a little bit more, too," Araki said. "She knew that we needed her to pitch, but I think with a little competition and not knowing if she was going to be the starter made her work even harder."

Leilehua, which moved up a spot to No. 5 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, has now won three straight games and is tied with Mililani for third place in the division.

Nistal and the Mules will host two-time defending state champion Campbell (5-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kaala Field.

Male Athlete of the Week: Brayden Chong, Waianae baseball
Brayden Chong didn't get off to a great start Saturday, but eventually he more than made up for it.

The Waianae junior ended up striking out a season-high 12 batters and was the winning pitcher in the Seariders' 8-3 win over previously-unbeaten Radford in a pivotal Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II game at the Rams' field.

Chong, a 5-foot-11 left-hander, went six innings in the win. He overcame an early deficit to scatter three runs on four hits with four walks. He threw 109 pitches in just his second outing of the regular season to go to 2-0 on the year.

"He struggled at first with locating early on, but he regained his composure and he went with what worked for him," Seariders coach Bernard Beaver said.

The Rams got two runs off of Chong in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the game. Waianae tied it in the top of the third, but Radford pulled back ahead with a single run in the bottom of the frame.

However, Chong kept the Rams scoreless the rest of the way and the Seariders' bats backed him with six runs in the final four innings.

"He had a hard time with his fastball, so he threw a lot of his secondary stuff. He had better control with his off-speed pitches that day," Beaver said. "Once he started getting ahead in the count that made things a whole lot easier for him."

It proved to be a blessing in disguise for Chong, who threw 92 pitches in his only other start of the season, when he struck out 11 and allowed three runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 13-3 six-inning win over McKinley on March 8.

"Because he was throwing more off-speed stuff, he wasn't really working his arm that hard (Saturday)," Beaver said. "He felt loose and didn't get tight, so we stayed with him longer than we normally would have."

Beaver calls Chong "more of a power pitcher," but said the junior can be crafty at times, too.

"Even though he wasn't locating his fastball, they knew he had it and so they had to be ready for that and that's what made the off-speed stuff work," Beaver said. "He had a couple of strikeouts where the third strike was a fastball just out of the strike zone and they chased it, but it was mainly his curveball that he got guys with. He threw it just short of the strike zone and they were chasing to it."

Chong, who bats clean-up and plays centerfield when he's not on the mound, clutched up at the plate in the top of the fourth inning, when he hit a two-out triple to the right-center field alley that plated two runs to give the Seariders the lead for good.

"He swings hard and he also has a quick bat, so not too many fastballs get by him," Beaver said.

In his first varsity season, Chong has hit safely in all five games. He leads the OIA D2 in batting average (.647), hits (11) and triples (3). Chong is also tied for second in runs scored (8) and doubles (2) and tied for third in runs driven in (6).

Despite his prowess on the diamond, it's in the classroom that Chong has made the biggest strides, Beaver said.

"He's been working hard, especially with his school work," Beaver said. "He got disciplined for academics at the very start of the seasons, but I guess with kids if you take away what they love they're forced to do the right thing. He's been turning that around — that's the main thing."

The win over Radford pushed Waianae into sole possession of first place in the eight-team OIA D2 standings.

"The kids knew that Radford would be one of the best teams in the division so they really were up for the game," Beaver said. "Radford is really disciplined, so we had to play good just to compete with them."

Chong and the Seariders defeated Kahuku Tuesday, 17-0, to go to 6-0 and will host Farrington at 11 a.m. Saturday.
