PEARL CITY — Pearl City scored early and often in a 7-1 rout of visiting Kahuku Tuesday night.

Sunshine Fontes netted her third hat trick of the season and Daelenn Tokunaga added a pair of first-half goals to help the Chargers improve to 8-2-1 on the season and advance to Thursday's semifinal round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls soccer tournament.

Pearl City, the defending state champion, will face East top seed Moanalua at 7 p.m. at Castle with a chance to move on to Saturday's league final.

Randi Fontes opened the scoring with her 17th goal of the season just 30 seconds into the game. Tokunaga scored her first goal of the night in the 10th minute and Sunshine Fontes found the back of the net about six minutes after her.

Caylie Uyema extended the Chargers lead to 4-0 with her goal in the 19th minute before Kahuku got on the board in the 28th minute with Jordan Abregano's first goal of the season.

Pearl City held a 5-1 lead at halftime.

Tokunaga netted her second goal of the game, and her team-leading 18th of the year, in the 35th minute to extend the Chargers' lead to 5-1 by halftime.

Sunshine Fontes closed out the scoring with a pair of second-half goals. She scored her 15th goal of the season in the 44th minute and added her 16th in the 79th minute.

It was the most goals allowed by Kahuku in a game this season. It entered Tuesday having surrendered 11 goals on the year.

The Red Raiders played their third full game without leading scorer Kamaile Aluli. The senior had a then-OIA best 16 goals scored this season before suffering a broken tibia early in Kahuku's 2-0 loss to Moanalua in a regular-season game on Jan. 7.

Tuesday's win ensured Pearl City of its record 33rd consecutive state tournament appearance.

The Red Raiders, who were coming off a 1-0 overtime win over Waialua in Monday's first round of the tournament, fell to 8-3-1 and will face Aiea in a 7 p.m. consolation game Wednesday at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
