KAPOLEI — Once it got heated up, Kapolei put the pedal to the metal Friday night.

Taulia Tagovailoa passed for 324 yards and four touchdowns to lead Kapolei, the No. 4 team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, to a commanding 49-9 win over visiting Moanalua before a crowd of about 1,000 at Kapolei Stadium.

The Hurricanes (8-1) used a 28-point second quarter to fuel their seventh straight win and will face Farrington in next Saturday's semifinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament.

Kapolei also clinched a berth in the Open Division state tournament with the win.

As the top seed out of the Red Division, the Hurricanes had a bye in last week's first round of the 12-team tournament.

The 14-day layoff showed in their first possession of the night: an abrupt 3-and-out that included a pair of Tagovailoa incompletions. However, it didn't last long.

Tagovailoa was a perfect 4-for-4 passing on Kapolei's next drive, which started off with a 49-yard screen pass to Josh Kansana, and culminated with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tagovailoa to Jaymin Sarono.

Wyatt McMillan's 31-yard field goal pulled Moanalua within 7-3 after the opening quarter.

That's when the ‘Canes seized control.

Four plays into the second quarter, Kansana scooted his way for a 40-yard TD run. After a Moanalua three-and-out, Kapolei needed just four plays to go 65 yards and stretch its lead to 21-3 following a 43-yard tackle-breaking TD run by Kansana.

The teams exchanged scoring strikes — Tagovailoa to Kaeo Alvarez-Ranan for a 15-yard Kapolei TD and Alakai Yuen to Rylan-Anthony Miguel for a 26-yard Moanalua TD — before cashed in on a turnover just before halftime.

Safety Leonard Lee intercepted Yuen deep in Na Menehune territory and one play later, Tagovailoa hit Wyatt Perez in the right flat for a 6-yard TD pass.

The Hurricanes held a 35-9 lead by halftime.

Kapolei recycled another Moanalua turnover into a score in the third quarter when Tagovailoa capped a seven-play drive with his 5-yard scoring strike to Jaymin Sarono. The score was set-up by Dylan Naehu's sack-fumble on Yuen, which was recovered by Kukea Emmsley.

"It just helps us as a defense knowing that when we give (the offense) the ball, they're going to be doing something with it and I think that's the biggest thing, that our offense is doing a lot of things with the ball when we get it back," said defensive lineman Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, who had one of two Kapolei sacks and deflected four passes at the line of scrimmage.

Tagovailoa completed 28 of 40 passes and was not intercepted. Sarono finished with game-highs of 10 receptions for 87 yards.

Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez praised the play of the big boys in the trenches.

"The offensive line was tremendous. Moanalua was bringing the house and we gave up zero sacks tonight and that's a credit to our offensive line and our offensive line coach, Al Kaaihue, who just does a great job with our guys," Hernandez said.

Antoneo Brown closed out the scoring with his 2-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.

Kansana, who has played sparingly since tearing multiple ligaments in his left knee just prior to the start of the 2015 season, finished with 162 yards from scrimmage.

"I'm really happy," said Kansana, who rushed for 83 yards on two carries and caught two passes for 79 yards. "Sitting out for so long and doing what I did tonight — I've just got to give all the glory to God, and I've got to thank all my linemen for blocking for me."

The Hurricanes finished with 404 yards of total offense.

Na Menehune (5-5) were held to 207 yards on offense, including minus-29 rushing yards. They were 0 of 3 on red-zone opportunities, including two turnover-on-downs, and converted on just 4 of 17 third-down chances.

""It was more of ourselves just hurting ourselves," Moanalua coach Savaii Eselu said. "We had correct things, we had things we were expecting — and it was going that way — but we just weren't capitalizing on stuff. Hats off to Kapolei; they did a good job. At the same time, it was one sided. We didn't capitalize on (anything)."

Yuen threw for 236 yards and a touchdown on 23-of-49 passing. Miguel caught nine passes for 64 yards and Ryan Ramones added eight grabs for 85 yards.
