HALAWA—Nick Kapule threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns to lift No. 2 Punahou past No. 7 Kamehameha, 57-24, in the nightcap of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I second round opener at HTFCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

The Buffanblu (7-1 overall, 6-1 league) complete the season sweep of the Warriors and outscored them, 155-53.

"It's difficult to beat a team three times, especially a caliber like Kamehameha, so we're grateful to move on," said Punahou coach Kale Ane.

Punahou advances to the second round final against Saint Louis (7-1 overall, 6-1 league) on Friday, Oct. 21. Both teams clinch spots in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division Football Championships. The third meeting will determine the ILH champion and seeded berth.

"We were trying to work hard everyday to come out with the win. The momentum is everything, but we have to clean up things and execute better next week," said Kapule, who passed for over 400 yards for the second time this season.

Kamehameha ends their season at 3-6 overall, 2-5 league.

"As I learn this league and our players, I'm excited for the foundation we built. I told the seniors I'm sorry I couldn't do more to help them in the win-loss column. They laid a foundation that is going to make Kamehameha to reckon with for years to come," said Kamehameha coach Abu Maafala.

The Buffanblu finished the game with 618 yards of net offense. Nick Kapule had 285 of Punahou's 350 yards of net offense with three TDs, and threw one interception in the first half. He also added 57 rushing yards on seven attempts.

"Kamehameha is a great team with a great front seven and DBs. We worked hard on the small things and executed well tonight," said Kapule.

"He's methodical and analytical and fun to watch. He puts so much time into it, so when it pays off you're proud of them," said Ane, on Kapule.

Judd Cockett caught seven passes for 180 yards and two TDs, Keala Martinson caught three passes for 110 and a score. Ethan Takeyama had 97 receiving yards and a touchdown.

"Nick Kapule and company, they are good at what they do. They made plays," said Maafala.

Punahou's Kamauliola Aina's 33-yard punt return set up a six play, 32 yard scoring drive capped by Enoch Nawahine's 1-yard TD.

After Kamehameha went three-and-out, four plays later, Kapule threw a 58-yard strike to Cockett and following another Warriors' punt, the Buffanblu struck again as Kapule found Martinson for 62-yards to make it, 21-0 with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

Kapule threw his third touchdown to Eamon Brady from 25 yards out and Cockett ran it in for 2 to make it, 29-0.

Kamehameha had 96 yards of net offense in the first half, but finished the game with 262 yards. 170 of the 262 yards came on the ground. Six out of seven offensive possessions resulted in punts in the first half. Adam Stack made a 35-yard field goal with no time remaining going into halftime.

After a bad exchange between Kapule and Nawahine, Andrew Aleki recovered the fumble and 10 seconds later, Thomas "Boogie" Yam rushed for a 33-yard touchdown. Yam rushed for two more scores from 15 and 5 yards to finish with 74 rushing yards on the night.

"Our kids want to be great, but they had to settle down. When we were able to do that, we had some success," said Maafala.

Kapule threw his fifth and final TD of the night to Takeyama early in the fourth quarter. Nawahine added his second rushing touchdown from 25 yards out and Stephen Barber threw a 6-yard TD to Tamatoa Falatea late in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.
