HALAWA — Running backs Taputafoki Kailea and Tyson Shimabukuro combined for 247 rushing yards and three touchdowns as Saint Francis pummeled PAC-5, 30-0, at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium Thursday night.

The Saints, the No. 2 team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Power Rankings, improved to 5-2 and advanced to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu second round final and will face third-ranked Damien at 5 p.m. next Friday. The winner will claim the league's lone spot in the state tournament next month.

It was the fourth consecutive win for Saint Francis, which notched its second win over PAC-5 in a span of six days and third overall this season.

The Saints racked up the rushing yardage for the second straight week. They ran for 355 yards Thursday after posting a season-high 396 in a 45-13 win over the Wolf Pack (2-5) last Friday.

"We had a good week of practice this past week," Saint Francis coach Kip Akana said. "The one thing I know about this team is we're getting better and better and better. Our offensive line is doing good and our running backs are doing good."

Kailea, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, picked up tough yardage between the tackles, many of them coming after first contact, while Shimabukuro, a 5-foot-8, 200-pound junior, slashed the Wolf Pack for long runs off the edges.

It was Kailea's most productive game of the season. The Tonga native had attempted just five carries all year before recording 10 rushes for a season-high 124 yards Thursday.

Kailea capped Saint Francis' first possession with a 5-yard touchdown run up the middle. The drive covered 67 yards in seven plays — all runs. Quarterback Bubba Akana opened the drive with a 12-yard scramble, Kailea ripped off a 15-yard run two plays later, and Shimabukuro picked up 19 yards off left tackle two plays after that.

Wembley Mailei ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to give the Saints an early 8-0 lead little more than three minutes into the contest.

A long snap over the head of PAC-5 punter Tyler Fukuroda bounced out of the back of the end zone for a Saint Francis safety about midway through the second quarter.

Three plays after Mailei blocked a Wolf Pack punt, Kailea broke a tackle en route to a 30-yard TD run with 4:12 left until halftime.

Eleven seconds before the intermission, Akana lofted a pass to Micah Kalei in the back left corner of the end zone for a 12-yard TD pass to culminate an eight-play drive that was extended by Shimabukuro's 3-yard pick-up to move the chains on 4th-and-2. Jacob Poole tacked on the PAT and the Saints took a 23-0 lead into halftime.

Mailei's blocked punt was one of two in the first half for Saint Francis' special teams unit.

"Those blocked punts were big for us," Kip Akana said. "Our offense stalled a few times, we had a couple turnovers and our special teams gets those two blocked punts and kept the pressure on PAC-5 and really changed the tone of the game."

Shimabukuro closed out the scoring with his 4-yard TD run early in the third quarter. He carried on all five plays of the scoring drive, which spanned 71 yards.

It was the fourth consecutive game that Shimabukuro, the ILH's leading rusher, rushed for more than 100 yards.

The Saints picked up 18 of their 22 first downs by rush. They used 10 different ball carriers and attempted just 11 passes and completed three of them for 33 yards.

PAC-5 managed just 138 yards of total offense, including minus-22 rushing yards. Quarterback Ryan Johnson threw for 160 yards on 15-of-36 passing, but was intercepted three times, twice by Justus Paaluhi-Caulk, who has five picks on the year.

"We just practiced hard all week and we knew it was do-or-die to make it to the ILH championship and we just played balls out," said Paaluhi-Caulk, a 5-foot-6, 150-pound sophomore. "We do a good job of being together and being a family with our team bonding and the offense and defense just did what we did.

Grey Ihu led the Wolf Pack with seven receptions for 93 yards.

It was the first shutout for Saint Francis this year.

PAC-5 ends the season having lost its last five contests.
