PEARL CITY — Small ball has long been a trademark for the Mililani softball program, but if Friday's season opener is any indication, the Trojans have some power in those bats as well.

Maya Yoshiura batted 3 for 4 with a two-run home run to lead visiting Mililani to a 12-5 win over Pearl City in the first game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division for both teams.

The Trojans (1-0) amassed 15 hits and posted five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Yoshiura, a junior shortstop, also had a pair of singles, scored three times and drove in three other runs in the win.

"It's a great win," said Yoshiura, the No. 2 hitter. "We knew coming into this game that it was going to be tough. Pearl City is a great opponent and we just had to be on point on all facets of the game."

Leadoff batt Keri Togami went 3 for 5 at the plate with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored and third baseman Mama Rivera had a couple of doubles and two RBI. Aubree Kim went the distance and allowed nine hits. She walked four and struck out eight, including the final two batters of the game.

"We're very, very pleased with this win," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. "(Pearl City is) a great team with great pitching and a great offensive hitting team. We knew it was going to be a battle today and I knew it was going to go back and forth, but our girls executed when it counted and so that's what happened today."

The Trojans took a brief lead on Rivera's ground rule double that plated Togami for the game's first run.

However, the Chargers (0-1) answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kylie Tasaki drove a 2-1 pitch to the right field power alley to score Kristin Frost and Hailey-Alexis Yamaguchi — both of whom got on base with one-out singles — and came home on a wild pitch.

Tyanna Kaaialii scored on another Aubree Kim wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to stretch Pearl City's lead to 4-1.

Things unraveled quickly, however, in the top of the fifth, when Mililani sent nine batters to the plate. The first four hitters reached base. Togami, Yoshiura, Shannon Pascua-Stanton, Tristan Cozo and Markie Okamoto recorded RBIs in the inning.

"We just got confidence in the box," Yoshiura said. "Our coaches told us that we needed to string the hits together because we were getting people on, we just couldn't get them in and they told us just to string it together and just make solid contact on the ball."

Rivera had another RBI double in the sixth inning before her teammates went back to work at the plate in the seventh. Tracie Okamura brought in two more runs with a pinch-hit double down the third base line and three batters later, Yoshiura belted a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to close out the scoring.

"I just leveled it out and just made solid contact with it," Yoshiura said. "I wasn't really trying to do too much to it, but I'm glad that I could do something for my team."

Pearl City coach Chad Obara could do little but tip his cap to the Trojans afterward.

"They have a well-balanced offense," Obara said. "They have the ones that can play the small ball and they have their big hitters and we knew that going in, so I'm not surprised. I'm a little bit surprised at how well they hit the ball though. Even their small ballers swung the bat pretty darn good today. They made a lot of good contact and found the holes; They did their job."

Tasaki, Darian Obara and Tyanna Kaaialii each paired hits for the Chargers (0-1).

Kristin Frost started the game and was tagged for eight runs on 11 hits in her 5 2/3 innings pitched and Kaaialii was charged with four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work and was the losing pitcher. Each pitcher re-entered for the other once in the game.

"The way Mililani was swinging the bats today we had to try and find something, so we put (Kaaialii) in and they got to her, too, so we had to bring Frost back in they got on her again," Obara said. "They swung the bat good today."

Antonio said the Trojans were prepared for both Pearl City pitchers.

"We did some preparation this past week to get ready for this game and either pitcher and so forth," said Antonio, whose team has won the last two OIA Division I titles. "We were disciplined (at the plate) and went after our pitch so I was happy with that, too; They just attacked."

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day to accommodate Mililani's junior prom.
