Curran, Cervantes power Campbell to Trojan Softball Classic title

WAIPIO — The Campbell softball team is picking up where it left off last year.

Cydney Curran led the offense and Danielle Cervantes provided the pitching as the Sabers powered their way to the championship of the 16th Annual Trojan Softball Classic with an 11-1 win over Pearl City at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Sunday afternoon.

The game was called due to the 10-run differential mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Curran, a senior second baseman, went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in four runs from while batting in the second spot in the lineup.

She roped a two-out triple to the alley in left centerfield that cleared the bases in the second inning. Cieana Curran, Nikki Corla and Chardonnay Pantastico all scored on the play, which gave the Sabers a 4-0 lead.

Pantastico led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run over the right field fence.

The Sabers posted four runs on five hits in the fourth inning, when they sent eight batters to the plate.

Two batters after Curran doubled to center, Elisa Favela reached on an fielding error that also allowed a run home. Trinity Favela and Zoie Recolan also drove in runs in the inning.

Curran also doubled in the fifth inning to bring in Pantastico and scored on a passed ball.

Cervantes turned in a solid performance in the circle. She allowed just one hit — a solo home run by Noel Saunders to lead off the top of the third — and six in the win. Saunders was the lone Charger to reach second base.

Pearl City coach Chad Obara credited Cervantes, who served as the Sabers' No. 2 arm last year behind Favela, a First Team All-Hawaii utility player last year.

"I thought she was just as strong last year actually, so she brought what we expected of her coming in," Obara said. "She's a good pitcher and she was on today, hitting her spots and straight out beat us."

Cervantes issued two walks, but both base runners were caught stealing by catcher Jocelyn Alo, a transfer from Kahuku.

"It's great having her with us," Curran said. "She's a very good player and she's always up and going and positive in the dugout and on the field and it's great knowing we have a power hitter right behind me."

Curran's offensive production against the Chargers — she had 11 total bases for the game — was in stark contrast to her struggles at the plate in the semifinal-round game that morning.

"Honestly, my first game I went like 0 for 3 and I was trying to adjust and my coaches helped me adjust so they really helped me out," said Curran, a First Team All-Hawaii selection last season.

Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said it was a matter of Curran taking with is being given and not forcing things.

"She was trying to swing at the outside pitch and she was trying to pull the ball and you can't do that," said Hermosura, last year's All-Hawaii Division I coach of the year. "She had to be more selective in what she's going to swing at. Hit doubles and drive in runs or put the ball in play and move people around by fast-bunting, but she's starting to see the picture because she always thought that she had to hit the ball before, and it's not always like that."

Trinity Favela batted 3 for 3 with a double and Pantastico scored three times.

Tyanna Kaaialii was the losing pitcher for Pearl City, which committed four costly errors behind her.

The Sabers went 8-0 in the 24-team, six-day tournament that included teams from all five leagues statewide. The Chargers' only two losses of the tournament were against Campbell.

"We're coming around all right, but from one to 10 at this time of the season, I'd say we're roughly about a six or a seven," Hermosura said. "It's not really what I want to see yet or what I want. We pitched well, we hit the ball well, but our defense does a lot of work."

Curran said the expectations of this year's Campbell team are once again the same.

"We still talk about it but we know that there's a target on our back and we still have to fight for what we want and that's being state champs again," the senior said. "We just want to be humble, but hungry."

Obara feels that Campbell is likely the team to beat come May's state tournament.

"I have to say they're the frontrunners to win it all right now," Obara said. "Everybody is going to have to play catchup."

The semifinal round of the saw Pearl City beat Punahou and Campbell top host Mililani.

Three-time defending Division II state champion Nanakuli claimed the consolation bracket title with a 3-2 win over Lahainaluna.

The Sabers have won all 10 of their preseason games so far and will travel to Maui for the Lahainaluna tournament this week.
