'Iolani-Kamehameha tops ILH tripleheader

Iolani will aim for a "hana hou" upset of Kamehameha Saturday night in the feature game of an Interscholastic League of Honolulu football tripleheader at Aloha Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., following the 4:45 game between Punahou and Pac-Five and the 2 p.m. opener with Saint Louis facing Damien.

A year ago at Aloha Stadium, the Raiders stunned the Warriors, 20-17, after Andrew Skalman's 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining. It turned out to be Kamehameha's only loss of the season, as the Warriors went on to win the Division I state championship.

Saturday, Kamehameha enters the game at 2-2 and coming off a 41-17 loss to Saint Louis in its ILH opener last week. The Warriors led, 17-13, at halftime but were outscored 28-0 in the final two quarters.

'Iolani is 3-1 overall after winning its league opener against Damien, 23-0, last Saturday. The Raiders had hoped for the return of Division II All-State receiver Trevyn Tulonghari against Kamehameha, but he is not expected to play despite being cleared for practice this past week. Tulonghari broke his ankle at the Oregon State University football camp this past June.

Raiders sophomore quarterback Reece Foy still has a deep corps of fleet receivers to throw to, led by 6-foot-3 senior Josiah Sukumaran (13 catches, 231 yards, 2 touchdowns). Kevin Barayuga (12-129, 2), Dane Arakawa (9-87), Kasey Takahashi (8-92, 2) and sophomore Tanner Nishioka (4-107) help spread defenses with their various routes.

Foy, who was the starting quarterback on 'Iolani's intermediate team last year, ranks fifth among O'ahu passers with 53 completions in 87 attempts (61 percent) for 685 yards and eight TDs.

Kamehameha will counter with a strong running game featuring three solid backs: DJ Kawewehe (41 carries, 191 yards), Tyler Meditz (26-142) and Jason Muraoka (17-85), who has returned from a preseason injury.

Quarterback Christian Akana has three big-play receivers in Charley Bollig IV (10 catches, 208 yards, 2 TDs), Brock Ruelke (6-127) and Keanu Haina (6-98, 1). Warriors All-State linebacker Kawika Stant returned to action last week after missing the first three games with an injury.
