Chase for the Championship
Hungry Rams ready to capture first state crown

Radford will look to accomplish a season long goal when it takes on Kapaa in the title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Football Championships Friday.

A win against the second-ranked Warriors (9-0) will give the Rams their first state title in school history.

"We're grateful for this opportunity," said Radford coach Fred Salanoa. "We're just fortunate to be in this situation and going on to play for the state championship."

The Rams, the top-ranked team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Football Power Rankings, had two goals at the start of the season: win an Oahu Interscholastic Association title and a state championship.

Radford glided through a perfect run in league play and escaped with a 48-46 semifinal win over Konawaena in the highest-scoring Division II state tournament game ever.

"It's an indescribable feeling," said receiver Blaise Manabe, who caught a game-high seven passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. "We worked so hard for this all throughout the offseason. This next game is our last goal and we have to take care of it to check it off our list."

Much of the team's offensive success this season can be attributed to receiver Blaise Manabe and running back Ace Faumui, transfers from Kalani, but it was quarterback Quintin Iriarte and wideout Thomas Reid who led the charge against the Wildcats.

Iriarte completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts for a season-high 288 yards and three touchdowns while Reid had five grabs for a season-high 135 yards and one score.

Back-up running back Kodi Ongory-Mathias also had his best game of his career and rushed 26 times for 176 yards and one touchdown. The Rams also dominated the time of possession with center Tayvis Passos leading the battle in the trenches.

"We're super confident in our offense right now," said Manabe. "Quintin is looking good, our offensive line is firing, running backs are doing a helluva of a good job and our receivers are doing good."

The explosive Rams offense that averages 40 points per game and 373.5 yards of total offense will have to go up against a Kapaa defense that has not given up an offense touchdown all year. The Warriors also posted their seventh straight shutout with a 24-0 semifinal win against Lahainaluna.

"We're going to back to the drawing board and get ready for our opponent," Salanoa said. "We know they haven't given up an offensive touchdown all year long so we got to get ready for that and make sure we play our ‘A' game."

While the Rams' defense gave up a season-high amount of points, the unit has been a steady piece to the team's success. Prior to the Konawaena game the Radford defense had posted four shutouts and had six contests were it only gave up one score.

"That scoreboard doesn't reflect how good they play," Manabe said after the Konawaena game. "They always bring it, it was just one of those days. Offense had to step it up and carry them. They carried us this whole season, tonight we carried the defense. Our defense is always top notch."

The Rams have adhered to the saying "success comes with hard work," and won't deter from it preparation for Kapaa.

"We're just going to do what we do every week and take every week as a new game," said Salanoa. "We never look forward to past our opponent. We always respect our opponent. We're going to watch film diligently and we'er going to come up with a scheme and go out and try to represent the island of Oahu to our best of our abilities."
