Q&A
Radford, Kaimuki to rematch for OIA D2 title

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II title game will feature a pair of teams that are riding win streaks.

Radford, the top-ranked team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Football Power Rankings, has not suffered a loss all year while sixth-ranked Kaimuki has won its last six games since starting the season 1-3.

The Rams (10-0) are averaging a whopping 40.4 points per game thanks to the hard running of Ace Faumui (104 carries, 1137 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns). They also won the regular season meeting between the two teams, 48-0.

Since the loss to Radford, the Bulldogs (7-3) have been perfect on the field. The insertion of defensive lineman Billy Masima (97 carries 714 yards, three touchdowns) at the running back position has played a big role in the team's success.

Kaimuki snatched victory out of the hands of defeat in the OIA Division I semifinal round against Nanakuli when Andrew Neves returned a kickoff 83 yards for the go-ahead score with no time left in regulation.

Both teams have already clinched spots in the six-team First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament.

We caught up with the coaches of the two teams a few days before their showdown on Friday.

ScoringLive: Describe your team's current situation in one word.

David Tautofi, Kaimuki coach: Driven. In the past few seasons, there have been a lot of adversities and life challenges that a lot of these kids have had to deal with off the football field. We're just looking to show how the program is and get them to notice that the program can be as good as they want it to be.

Fred Salanoa, Radford coach: Fortunate. We're just fortunate to be in the situation that we're in, to be playing in the championship game.

ScoringLive: What has been key in your team's current win streak?

Tautofi: Everyone doing their job and everyone buying in as a team. The team is realizing that they need each and one of these individuals, but these individuals are nothing without the team. They're just being into each other as one team, one family and one heart.

Salanoa: I think the continuous hard work from our players. They set a goal in the offseason and they knew that as they went along that the one thing that they needed to make sure they needed to do is be consistent with hard work. That's what has allowed us to be where we are today.

ScoringLive: Who has been an under-the-radar contributor for your team this year?

Tautofi: Our defensive line as a group. They haven't been talked out about a lot, but within the last three games they have accumulated about 15 sacks. Against Nanakuli we were able to disrupt their style of offense which helped us come away with the victory.

Salanoa: I would say the offensive line. They never get any kind of publicity, or TV time, or recognition in the paper, but they're definitely the group that allows our offense to be successful.

ScoringLive: What concerns you most about this week's opponent?

Tautofi: I'm not sure if there's much that concerns me more so that we need to keep our head on a swivel and that this is the best team in the division. Coming in against the best team we need to bring our best effort and our best game. What it comes down to is doing our job and minimizing our penalties.

Salanoa: I would say that they have some players that have been doing good for them, especially No. 99 Billy Masima. We just have to make sure we know where he's at on the field at all times, whether it's offense or defense. We need to make sure that we know what we're going to do offensively and defensively was we go up against him and the other 10 guys on the team."

ScoringLive: Your team wins this game if …

Tautofi: Our team wins this game if we minimize our mistakes and do our jobs. Radford has been able to pull off a amazing season and something's clicking for them. We've been the same way and we don't think we win by luck. These boys work hard to win. In big games like this, it always comes down to who makes the least mistakes.

Salanoa: I think our team wins this game if we execute and just stick to what coaches are teaching the players and if we believe in one another.

ScoringLive: What would bringing home this OIA D2 championship mean to your school and community?

Tautofi: It would mean everything. It would mean more than just pride for the school and the community. It would bring back hope and just direction of where we want the student body to be going when it comes to success and dedication. To me it means more than just football. It brings back hope to the school and community to have successful kids that ultimately will be going out to society.

Salanoa: Whatever sport it is, whatever school it is, it's always nice to have a championship come home to your trophy case. That was one of our goals, to make sure we make it to the OIA championship. We're going to play our game and hopefully we come out on top.

Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.
