HALAWA—Iolani (1-0) did their damage in the second quarter to rout Kamehameha-Maui (0-1), 48-14 in the nightcap of the 52nd Annual Father Bray Memorial Classic on Saturday night at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

"Not bad, we got off to a slow start, first game to get out the jitters. Next week we have to look a whole lot better. Offensively we sputtered, but if it was a plus our defense looked solid," said Iolani coach Wendell Look.

Iolani scored 41 of their 48 points in the second quarter. The Raiders got two rushing touchdowns apiece from running backs Brian Pascua and Gafoaleata Fetui-Salavea in the first half and accumulated 181 net rushing yards for the game.

Pascua scored rushing touchdowns from 1-yard and 11-yards out for an early 13-0 lead. Kevin Matsuoka intercepted Kainoa Sanchez's pass 10 seconds later to return it 21-yards for a touchdown. Fetui-Salavea added another rushing touchdown for the Raiders to go up 27-0.

Fetui-Salavea added another rushing touchdown and the Raiders got another one after Christian Naeole blocked the punt and Jordan Iwasaki returned it 10-yards for the score making it 41-0 going into halftime.

"I think defensively, it's our strength. We got returnees up there and they are the ones who are going to have to set the tone for us. Offensively we're young at the trigger position so we have to get sharper there," said Look.

The Raiders rotated three quarterbacks for the game—Tai-John Mizutani, Jarin Yokogawa, and Jake Smotherman. Mizutani went 5-of-8 for 96 yards while Yokogawa and Smotherman passed for 33 and 37 yards respectively.

"They are still in competition, we decided to go with every series instead of counting plays. It was up to them to see how long they could stay in. If they could string a 10-play drive together then that would show us something.

Iolani held KS-Maui to -12 yards of net offense in the first half. The Warriors found life in the second half as Sanchez threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns and Nathan Facuri led the Warriors with four catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Kaniaupio had two catches for 65 yards and touchdown.

Because of the 35-point mercy rule, the second half began with running clock. The Warriors ended the running clock after Sanchez threw a 25-yard touchdown to Kaniaupio to make it 41-7 with 6:30 to go in the third.

Troy Hanaoka scored a 3-yard touchdown late in the fourth and Sanchez found Facuri for a 35-yard touchdown for the last score of the game.  

Iolani will host Kealakehe at Kozuki Stadium on Aug. 15, while KS-Maui will open up the Maui Interscholastic League season against D2 No. 4 Lahainaluna on Aug. 22.
