Duque-Winchester second prep pick in MLB draft

It took 35 rounds or 1,053 picks between the only recent high-school graduates who were selected in the 50th Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which concluded Wednesday.

Recent Iolani School graduate Pikai Duque-Winchester was taken in the 40th and final round by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was the third player with ties to Hawaii taken by the Rays. Kamehameha alumnus Kewby Meyer was picked in the 37th round out of Nevada-Reno. Meyer was drafted out of Kamehameha in 2011 by Philadelphia. The Rays also took University of Hawaii pitcher Tyler Brashears in the 14th round.

"It's a good feeling," said Duque-Winchester, an All-Hawaii second-team selection. "Not too many kids get drafted."

The only other recent high-school graduate taken was Campbell pitcher Ian Kahaloa, who was picked in the fifth round by Cincinnati.

Other players with ties to Hawaii picked were: Ka'ai Tom (Saint Louis) by Cleveland in the fifth round; UH pitcher LJ Brewster (Miami) in the 22nd round; Oklahoma State second baseman Tim Arakawa (Moanalua) in the 23rd round by the Los Angeles Angels; Northern Colorado outfielder Jensen Park (Iolani) in the 32nd round by Colorado; and UH pitcher Quintin Torres-Costa (Waiakea) in the 35th round by Milwaukee.

Arakawa, Park and Meyer were college seniors this past season and are expected to sign.

Duque will weigh his options likely until the MLB signing deadline of July 17. He said he will be playing in a Canadian collegiate summer league before deciding to sign to go to UH, where he signed a letter of intent.

"We'll see after that," he said. "If I do well, I may sign a pro contract, so we'll see."

He said he was referred to the Canadian league through the team he played with last summer.

Tom attended Fort Scott (Kan.) JC before transferring to Kentucky where he earned All-Southeastern Conference honors as a sophomore. He led the Wildcats with 51 RBI this past season and batted .375 in helping his team to the NCAA Regionals.

Arakawa attended Yavapai (Arizona) JC before transferring to Oklahoma State, where he made an immediate impact as an All-Big 12 second-team selection at second base. He started in 57 of his team's 58 games this past season and was seocnd on the team with 37 RBI in helping his team reach the regionals.

Park, an outfielder, enjoyed great success at Northern Colorado, where he was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2012, the Great West Player of the Year in 2013 and he Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year this past season.

Torres-Costa, a draft-eligible sophomore because of a red-shirt freshman year, was 1-3 with a 4.03 earned run average in 19 pitching appearances.

Meyer was an All-Mountain West selection as a junior and is in the top four a several offensive batting categories in Nevada history.

It is not completely over for players not drafted. They can be signed as undrafted free agents or attend tryouts. The Atlanta Braves are holding an open tryout camp July 18 at Keehi Lagoon Park. Check-in is 10 a.m. with tryouts starting at 11 a.m. It is open to players ages 16 to 23, according to the Braves' website. Participants must supply their own gloves and shoes. Wooden bats and baseballs will be provided by the Braves.
