Joshua Muneno might not have had his best outing this season, but it was good enough and Maryknoll held off resilient Pac-Five, 8-6, Tuesday to capture the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II tournament and overall championship at Ala Wai Field.

The two-time defending Division II state champion Spartans (13-2) are likely to secure the top seed for the eight-team state tournament set for May 7 to 9. They will be joined by Pac-Five (11-6).

Maryknoll, which won the regulars-season championship, has won all the ILH D2 titles since the league went with a segregated D1-D2 schedule in 2013, won the regular season crown.

Muneno (7-0) allowed six runs, four earned, six hits and two walks in tossing a complete game against the Wolfpack. It was the most runs he has allowed, earned and unearned, this season.

"Any No. 1 pitcher, you want to give him the benefit of the doubt," Maryknoll coach Randy Yamashiro said "He knows how to get out of tough situations. He's been in it before. We were monitoring him. We were going to give him one more tough situation and monitor the situation after that."

After Dayne Ramos' solo inside-the-park home run with one out in the sixth, Muneno retired the final five batters easily to preserve the win.

"I just had to do my job," said Muneno, last season's All-Hawaii Division II Player of the Year. "They're still a great team. Have to play hard. You never know what's going to happen. Luckily, we came out with the win today."

As a junior last season, he was supported by a large senior cast. This year, the players around him are young, so he and catcher Neal Nakasone, shortstop Kahi HIrano and third baseman Jason Nakamura - the four captains - have been providing leadership.

"We're just young this year," Muneno said. "A lot of guys had to step up. We had a lot of seniors graduate last year. We had to work hard and help the team."

It would have been a tough road for Pac-Five to win the overall title. The Wolfpack needed to win three games in a row against the Spartans. But coach Dennis Fukunaga was pleased with the effort of his team throughout the season. He said an OIA coach called him to tell him his team had shown resilience in the tournament and that's what Fukunaga told his players after the loss to Maryknoll.

"I think we were really battle-tested this past week," Fukunakga said of his team surviving the backside of the double-elimination tournament. "It kind of showed today; the legs were tired. But it's a good thing. Going into the state, we'll be strong."

The Spartans supported Muneno with two three-run innings. In the first, they had runners at first and second with one out and Nakamura delivered an RBI single, but on the play, the right fielder misplayed the ball, allowing another run to score, as Nakamura pulled into third. He was later thrown out at home when Kaliko Thomas reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third. After Chayson Dulatre's single sent Thomas to third, Cade Ohata's single scored Thomas to make it 3-0 before Matthew Dunaway grounded out

The Wolfpack quickly responded with two in the top of the second. After Francis Sonoda's sacrifice fly to center, Ramos singled and courtesy runner Justin Ogasawara took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt. Catcher Nakasone's throw sailed into left field and Ogasawara stayed at third when he saw left fielder Taylor Hoe come in to back up the play. But the ball got by Hoe, allowing Ogasawara to score to pull Pac-Five to 3-2 before Muneno retired the next two batters.

Maryknoll returned the favor with a three-run third, chasing Wolfpack starting pitcher Ramos in the process. with the bases loaded, Brandon Miyasato replaced Ramos on the mound. Miyasato balked to bring in a run and Dulatre's two-run single brought home the other two runners to make it 6-2. Ohata walked, but Dunaway grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Maryknoll added a run in the fourth on Nakasone's RBI single, but the Wolfpack pulled to 7-5 with a three-run fifth on an RBI ground out by Lee Tanaka and two-run single by Casey Wond.

The Spartans got a run in the fifth on Hirano's run-scoring double to make it 8-5. The Wolfpack made it interesting when Ramos' liner to center bounced over center fielder Ohata for the inside-the-park homer. The veteran Muneno apparently was not fazed, retiring the next five batters to end the game.

"They learned the basics of our program: stay together and just play," Yamashiro said of his team. "They followed our instructions, so we have to build on that towards the state tournament."
