Pearl City girls, Moanalua boys triumph at Mililani Invitational

MILILANI — As expected, the Pearl City girls and Moanalua boys came away as the big winners from the Seventh Annual Mililani Judo Invitational Saturday afternoon.

A crowd of about 500 fans at the Mililani High School gymnasium saw the Chargers' girls and Na Menehune boys each claim their fifth Mililani Invitational title.

Pearl City, which has won the last three girls' team state championships, defeated host Mililani in the girls' final, 67-20.

Adrienne Nazareno was the lone Charger to win by ippon, at 103 pounds, while 139-pounder Netanya Kang won by waza-ari. The Chargers picked up 50 points off five uncontested matches as the Trojans had a lineup of just five judoka.

"I think we did good as a team," said Nazareno, a junior who placed fifth in the state at 98 pounds last year.

It was the fourth consecutive Mililani Invitational crown for Pearl City.

"We needed to defend it; that's our bowl," said Nazareno, who threw Mililani's Izzy Masiglat with a drop seoinage for ippon. "I believed in our team to try our best and that's what we did."

The Chargers went 4-0 in the tournament after finishing first in their pool before routing Campbell, 100-0, in a semifinal match.

"We did really well, considering a lot of my wrestlers were still healing up from injuries, so I didn't get a chance to put everyone in that I wanted to, but as a whole they fought really well as a team and stuck together," Pearl City coach Robin Puahala said.

Haylie Shinsato (122 pounds) and Dani Santiago (154) both won by ippon for all of Mililani's points.

Meanwhile, Moanalua fended off Pearl City in the boys' final, 53-25.

Ten-point winners for Na Menehune were Randy Manuwa (121 points), Chase Wusstig (132), Sean Davis (161), Diego Delormier (220) and Ryan Souza (285).

Wusstig, a freshman, threw Pearl City's Kyson Yoshimura for ippon with a left drop seoinage that broke a 10-all tie.

"We played each other before; He's pretty good, he can move," Wusstig said of Yoshimura. "As a team we did pretty good. It was pretty decent."

Moanalua coach Brandon Maki said it was nice to get in a quality match before the season gets underway in two weeks.

"Pearl City put up a good fight," Maki said. "They look tough this year — on both sides, boys and girls — (Puahala) is doing a good job up there."

Robert Yamasaki (132 pounds) and Matthew Keopuhiwa (198) were 10-point winners for the Chargers.

As for his own team's performance, Maki was pleased, but not satisfied.

"They did all right, but we've still got a long more way to go and we understand that Kapolei is the best team and they're the returning state champs and they're the champs until somebody beats them and that's the goal, ultimately."

Na Menehune posted an unblemished 4-0 mark Saturday. They finished first in their pool and handily defeated Campbell, 79-10, in a semifinal match.

Kapolei, which captured their first boys' team state title last year, was not among the participants Saturday.

Other participating schools Saturday were Kamehameha, Saint Louis, Campbell, Leilehua and Roosevelt.
