Hori's goals lift Iolani by No. 2 seed Campbell, 2-1

WAIPAHU - Kristen Hori scored a goal in each half and unseeded Iolani squeaked past second-seeded Campbell, 2-1, Friday night in the semifinals of the Outrigger Resorts Division I girls' state soccer tournament at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Raiders (12-0-3), the only unbeaten team left in Division I, will play for the championship for the first time since 2013, when they beat Punahou, 3-1 to capture their fourth state crown. They will face the Trojans at 7 p.m. Saturday in a battle of unseeded teams.

"It feels amazing, especially as a senior," Hori said of returning to the title game. "It's like this is the dream."

The Sabers (12-3-1), who completed their most successful season in school history, will play for third place. Regardless of the outcome, it will be the school's highest finish ever.

"I'm proud of my team," Sabers junior forward Aliani Lorenzo said. "For us to come this far and challenging a private school and for them winning just 2-1. They didn't blow us away. It's OK. I'm happy either way. I'm happy with my team. We worked really hard."

The Sabers opened the scoring on Aryana Cabudol's direct kick from 20 yards that just got by the diving goalie Courtney Overland in the 17th minute.

But eight minutes later, the Raiders tied it on Hori's goal from 18 yards on a right-footed kick from the left side.

Hori's game-winner came at the 56th minute on a left-footed kick from about 10 yards.

For the Raiders, they had to secure Lorenzo, the Sabers' best ball-control player and leading scorer.

"It was holding No. 11 (Lorenzo's jersey number), knowing where she was," Iolani coach Kristin Masunaga said.

On the offensive side, Iolani put on a passing clinic. It seemed all of the Raiders' passes went undefended as they controlled the ball most of the game, leaving the Sabers few scoring opportunities in the process. Iolani took 20 shots on goal to Campbell's 10. The Raiders had eight corner kick tries to none for the Sabers.

"That's our style: possess," Masunaga said. "We tell the girls don't force, play simple, just do the things you're supposed to do."

"Iolani has awesome control of the ball, good possession, well-coached," Leong said. "The thing that hurt us was (fullback) Ashlyn Chargulaf down early in the game (with a concussion). We had to make adjustments. That really hurt us because she's a big part of that defense.

"It's unfortunate (the injury), but I'm proud of them. We came this far. We fought hard and never gave up. All the injuries. Some girls are sick and they still played…they did an awesome job."

Iolani is not a typical unseeded team. The Raiders have yet to lose this season, but three ties, twice to Kamehameha and once to Punahou, put them one point behind Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou, the top seed of the tournament. The Buffanblu, whose only loss was to Iolani during the regular season, was ousted from the tournament by Mililani in the quarterfinals.

As an unseeded team, Hori said she relishes the underdog role in the tournament.

"Even though we had to play the extra game (as an unseeded team), I felt it was OK," Hori said. "Punahou had all the pressure and we were out here and I guess you could consider us the underdogs. I mean, we're not seeded so we have nothing to lose and we're here and we're just playing our hardest."

The Raiders will be seeking their fifth state crown.
