Kaiser girls, Roosevelt boys win OIA swim titles; 7 records fall


Kaiser's girls and Roosevelt's boys capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association swimming and diving championship Saturday at CORP pool.

Seven individual records were set in the finals.

Kalani junior Paris James finished the 100-yard girls' butterfly in 56.86 seconds, breaking the previous best of 57.72 by Roosevelt's Kathy Lyn Allen in 1991.

Campbell senior Makoa Alvarez finished the 100-yard boys' backstroke in 49.04 seconds, beating his own record set in the preliminaries at 49.39. His preliminary time beat his previous record of 51.42 from last year.

Alvarez also set the record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.05 seconds, beating the previous mark of 49.48 by Mililani's Kevin Frifeldt in 2014.

Roosevelt sophomore Jun Yeb Yoon finished the 100-yard boys' freestyle in 46.96 seconds, besting  thhe 47.05 mark set by Pearl City's Daren Choi in 2010.

Kaiser's girls' 200-yard free relay team of junior Zoey Fox, senior Julie Heddon, sophomore Hanna Heiss and junior Lara Yasumi completed their swim in 1:42.08, breaking the previous best of 1:43.47 set by Kaiser in 2011.

Kapolei senior Leilani Herrera broke the girls' 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.96 seconds, beating the 2011 mark of 58.64 held by Kapolei's Madeline Jamora. Herrera also set the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:04.52, beating 1:04.76 set last year by Kaiser's Corrine Shigeta.
