HALAWA — Second-seeded and No. 2 Mililani outlasted No. 6 Farrington, 17-14 in the 16th Annual First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Football State Championships semifinals at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night. For the second year in the row, the Trojans return to the championship game against Punahou next week Friday.

"Give credit to Mililani, they are moving on and they deserve it and I wish them the best in the state championship," said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto.

"Hat's off to Farrington they played well, anyone could've won that game, fortunately for us we made enough plays to move on," said Mililani coach Rod York.

"They (Farrington) were a heck of a team for sure and they gave us a run for our money, no doubt, all the credit to them, but we have to do better for sure. Punahou is going to be tough for sure and we are grateful for the opportunity to be in it again. Hat's off to our defense, they won the game for sure," said McKenzie Milton.

McKenzie Milton threw for 280 yards on 20-of-27 passing, Kalakaua Timoteo caught nine passes for 100 yards and Vavae Malepeai rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

"McKenzie was putting the ball in the right places, couldn't asked for better balls. Sometimes we messed up, but we looked forward to the next play. We have to do our jobs and execute and what the play is, we have to take it day by day," said Timoteo, who's longest catch was 26-yards.

After Farrington went three-and-out, Mililani showed no signs of rust as they went 68 yards on five plays in 50 seconds as Cheyne Constantino scored on a 10-yard run to put the Trojans up first.

From the Mililani 11-yard line, Montana Liana rushed for an 8-yard gain, but Tielu Mamea stripped him of the ball and Rex Manu recovered it. Farrington had another chance to turn the tide as they forced Malepeai to fumble and recovered it in Mililani territory, but that was nullified by a personal foul penalty.

"The effort was there, but like the last game, turning it over in twice in the red zone really affected the outcome. We cannot afford to have turnovers and we had one taken away from us, one on defense and those two plays were game-changing plays," said Okimoto.

Malepeai scored on a 6-yard run midway through the second quarter to make it, 14-0.

The Govs defense held the Trojans to 6 net rushing yards in the first half and 43 yards for the game—their lowest rushing output of the season. However, Mililani was able to move the ball down field through the air.

"Our skill guys did a good job making plays and our o-line gave me some time to get rid of the ball," said Milton.

"The numbers are skewed because we passed the ball a lot more. Farrington did a good job and we have to make corrections," said York.

Ranan Mamiya took the ensuing kick off 72 yards to the Mililani 25-yard line. The Govs scored after Montana Liana threw a 14-yard touchdown to CJ Liana, Kekoa Sasaoka's PAT made it, 14-7.

In the second half, Jerrod Cunningham tacked on a 24-yard field goal to make it, 17-7.

Mililani's defense held the Govs to 101 net rushing yards for the game and had five sacks for the game.

"Farrington came out hard and they were definitely ready and it was a long time since our homecoming game, but ultimately it was about the team who lasts and who finishes in the fourth quarter and we were that team. It was a whole team effort, linemen, backers, secondary. When they broke through, everyone was there to mop up," said Rex Manu, who recorded two sacks.

Late in the fourth, Liana threw a 60-yard touchdown to Mamiya to bring the Govs within 3, 17-14. Farrington tried an onsides kick attempt, but were called for offisides twice. Mililani recovered the ball and ran out the clock.

"Our kids wanted this game. We huddled them up and told them we are going to finish this game with class," said Okimoto.

Both teams combined for 24 penalties for 251 yards, Mililani with 132 penalty yards and Farrington with 119.

"We took care of the drives, but when we got something going, there was flag and we have to work on the penalties. Penalties just killed us and every time we got something going," said York.

"Definitely penalties held us back and we get it taken back from a holding call and from there it was mental mistakes, like running wrong routes and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, said Timoteo.

"The pass opened up a lot more plays and when we controlled the tempo, things were smooth. Once we got penalties and mental errors, things started to slow down," said Malepeai.

Montana Liana threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns and Challen Faamatau rushed for 68 yards on 16 carries.

Farrington ends the season at 9-3 overall, but Okimoto is proud how his team responded tonight.

"Most proud of how they responded tonight, not lying down the first time we lost to them. Tonight I'm proud of their effort, I think they understood that we were not going to have the same performance as last game, simple as that. We knew what were capable of and the kids bought into learning not doing their own thing and it showed tonight. I think this is their (Mililani) lowest output of the year and it's something we could hang our hat on, of course we wanted the win, but I'm proud of the effort," said Okimoto.

Mililani will play the Punahou, in a rematch of last year's championship game, next week Friday at 7 p.m.

"We got to get our minds right, we have to step it up at all angle s of the game. There's always room for improvement and we have a lot to improve on," said Malepeai.
