Hawaii Prep edges Radford in opening round of D2 tourney


Gabbie Ewing put down 26 kills with 26 digs to lead Hawaii Prep in a back-and-forth five-set win over Radford in an opening round match of the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Volleyball State Championships at Kaimuki Wednesday night. The scores were 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 16-14.

Ka Makani (11-5) also got 13 digs, seven kills and five aces from Ula Brostek and Julia Perry chipped in 10 digs. Ewing took 69 total swings in the match and committed 20 errors for a .087 hitting percentage.

As a team, HPA hit .095 for the match. Radford hit .000.

Noel Phillips had 12 kills and Chloe Snyder 11 for the Rams (5-8), who also got 19 digs from Katarina Tenorio.

HPA advances to Thursday's quarterfinal round, where it will play third-seeded Hawaii Baptist in a 7 p.m. match at Kaimuki. Second-seeded Seabury Hall takes on Kailua in the 5 p.m. match.

Over at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium, top-seeded Konawaena will take the floor against La Pietra in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal and fourth-seeded Kalaheo will meet Saint Francis at 7 p.m.

Wednesday's other first-round results:
Kailua def. Honokaa 25-16, 25-23, 25-19: RaeLynn Leong had 13 kills with 10 digs and Delcie Williams and Jasmyn Keohohina-Malina added 11 kills apiece as the Surfriders (7-8) swept the Dragons (9-7).

La Pietra def. Hana 25-13, 25-23, 25-17: Savana Breene posted 13 kills with 11 digs and Peri Green added 11 kills as the Panthers (10-6) swept the Dragons (9-4).

Saint Francis def. Kauai 25-17, 25-17, 25-11: Malia Luis-Mateo recorded 13 kills and Lacey Satele notched 34 assists as the Saints (11-3) swept the Red Raiders (11-3).
