Crusaders, Warriors to meet in crucial ILH clash

With its back against the wall, Kamehameha answered the call last week with its 17-10 win over Punahou, which was previously unbeaten in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

The Warriors had to win in order to keep its league title hopes alive and put Punahou's celebration on hold for at least another week. With two weeks left in the ILH's Division I schedule, Punahou and Kamehameha are tied for first at 5-1 while Saint Louis is 3-2.

The Crusaders face a must-win Friday when it meets Kamehameha in a 7:45 p.m. game at Aloha Stadium. A loss would end any possibility of an ILH crown for Saint Louis, the defending Division I state champion. If the Saints win, their lone chance to make the postseason would be to beat Punahou next Thursday, forcing a three-way tie atop the standings. In that case, there would be a three-way playoff to determine who will represent the ILH in the state tournament.

However, if Saint Louis loses both games, Kamehameha and Punahou would finish tied at 6-1 and would have to play a winner-take-all game to decide the ILH champ. If Kamehameha beats Saint Louis and the Crusaders beat Punahou, the Warriors will finish first. If the Warriors lose to the Saint Louis and Punahou beats the Saints, the Buffanblu would claim the league crown.

The game between the Crusaders and Warriors will follow a Division II game between Damien and Pac-Five at 5 p.m.

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

Damien vs. Pac-Five, Friday, 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium

'Iolani has already locked up its fifth straight ILH Division II title and a trip to the state tournament with its win over Pac-Five Saturday, making this game purely about pride for the Monarchs (0-7 overall, 0-5 ILH) and the Wolf Pack (4-5, 1-5). Damien has struggled mightily under first-year head coach Eddie Klaneski this season, averaging just 3.9 points per game on offense, while allowing 41.3 by opponents. Pac-Five won the previous meeting between these teams, 34-13, three weeks ago.

No. 7 Saint Louis vs. No. 5 Kamehameha, Friday, 7:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium

The Crusaders (6-2, 3-2) have had some time off to heal up from injuries that have riddled them all season. Saint Louis has played just twice - both times against Division II opponents - in the past month. It had a bye following a 42-35 win over 'Iolani back on Sept. 23 and another week off following a 63-0 rout of Damien two weeks ago. Saint Louis, which led 43-0 at halftime, racked up 505 yards of offense, including 316 (12.6 per rush) rushing against the Monarchs.

The Warriors (6-3, 5-1) moved up one spot in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings following its win over the Puns Saturday. Kamehameha, which was led by its defense and special teams in the win, avenged a 17-14 loss to the Buffanblu three weeks ago. Last week, Pono Choy's 60-yard fumble return in the third-quarter put Kamehameha ahead for good and Bronson Barretto's 6-yard TD run in the fourth proved to be the difference.

Kamehameha beat Saint Louis, 28-21, the first time the teams met back on Sept. 2.

Waimea beat Kauai, 6-3, Saturday in a low-scoring affair and has won three in a row.
