MAKIKI – Farrington, ranked No. 6 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, keeps its championship hopes alive with a 37-15 win over tenth-ranked Waianae in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I quarterfinal playoff game at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Friday night. 

With the win the Governors (7-1) will advance to their fourth straight OIA semifinal game. Farrington will take on No. 4 Kahuku next Thursday at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. 

"It's a big win. If we didn't get it we would have to turn in our pads so our guys didn't want to do that," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said on the win. "To get back to the semifinals and face Kahuku, we look forward to the challenge. This game gets us ready for Kahuku because they're both physical teams." 

Farrington used a balanced offensive attack in the first half to take a 21-7 lead heading into the break. The Governors combined for 103 first half rushing yards while quarterback Montana Liana was completed six of nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

"It's important that we don't be one-dimensional. We have to be able to have everybody contribute so that we can play with the elite teams," said Okimoto.

In the second half Farrington went for the jugular and pounded the rock to rack up 160 yards rushing after the break. Ranan Mamiya, who was held to 36 yards rushing in the first half, led the ground game with a season-high 140 yards and a score.

Mamiya had a long 51-yard run on a wide receiver reverse that helped set up the Governors' first score of the third quarter.

"I just told him in the locker room during halftime, ‘it's going to come. Just keep your head together and it's going to come.'" Liana said on Mamiya's second half performance.

Contributing to the rushing onslaught was sophomore Challen Faamatau with 35 yards and two touchdowns. Fullbacks Freedom Alualu and Bugsy Tui also got in the action with a combined 55 yards.

The Farrington defense also turned up the intensity in the second half. Waianae had 126 yards rushing after the first half, but finished with a net of 108 yards rushing once all four quarters were over.

"Today we had a good performance on both the run and the pass but I think we overlooked Waianae and its running game in the first half. In the end I think we did good on stopping the interior runs," said Farrington linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard who finished with a team-high eight tackles. 

Pritchard had one of four Farrington sacks in the win. Breiden Fehoko, who played in a standup left defensive end role, had two sacks and Micheal Sanerivi added another.

The Governors got off to a quick start after forcing a fumble on Waianae's first offensive possession. Defensive lineman Ansen-Joe Faamasino recovered the loose ball at the Seariders' 26-yard line to set up Liana's play-action touchdown pass to Kingston Moses-Sanchez on Farrington's first play from scrimmage.

Farrington's second touchdown of the night came after Pritchard dropped Waianae quarterback Ioane Kaluhiokalani Jr. for a loss of 14. The Governors got the ball back on the Seariders' 46-yard line and was able to punch it in with Faamatau's one-yard plunge. 

Waianae found some stability on its next drive and was able to put up points. With a jumbo-package, no-huddle attack the Seariders was able to cash in on a 12-play, 95-yard drive with John Barbieto's nine-yard scamper.

Barbieto was the Seariders' main source of offense with 187 total yards from scrimmage.

Liana tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Keola Kealoha in the second quarter to give the Governors a 14-point lead at halftime. 

Waianae defensive linemen Nayton Kuresa added a touchdown run and two-point conversion catch in the fourth quarter to give the Seariders another score.  Kuresa led the defense with eight tackles and a sack.
