Top Performers
Saint Louis' Tagovailoa, Kaiser's Tashiro collect top honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis football
Tua Tagovailoa had the best night of his young prep career Saturday night, but his coach believes the best is yet to come from the sophomore quarterback.

It was a night to remember for Tagovailoa, who racked up 589 yards of total offense and five touchdowns to lead Saint Louis to a pivotal 46-38 win over previously-undefeated Kamehameha at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. The southpaw completed 23 of his 33 pass attempts for 399 yards and threw touchdown passes to four different receivers. In all, he connected with seven different pass catchers and was intercepted once.

"I think he had an outstanding game, (but) when you see him perform at practice you know what he can do in the game, so it's not really a surprise because we see him everyday when he throws and when he runs," Crusaders' coach Cal Lee said of Tagovailoa. "It is amazing to see during the game, but I think we take it for granted how good he is. It's still truly incredible what he did. He was really outstanding."

Tagovailoa also carried the ball 24 times and rushed for 190 yards — both game-high marks. He had 340 passing yards and 101 rushing yards in the first half alone, and added a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

"The sky is the limit as far as how good he can be," Lee said. "I think he can get better and it's because players of his caliber have a worth ethic that is going to elevate him to somewhere else. He works hard, but he wants to just get better and better and better and that's what you want to have. Kids have to come out and want to get better and he has that built in. He has the inner drive that you don't see very often. He doesn't let down and he's not satisfied in his performances."

Lee said Tagovailoa has become more and more comfortable with each snap he has taken.

"The confidence comes with experience and I think he's every game he's getting more and more confidence and experience," Lee said. "I think the success he's had gives him more confidence in what he wants to do. Performance always gets people pumped but, but he's one to always give credit where it's due — to the other players around him — but the key in any type of offensive scheme is the quarterback and he's doing a heck of a job for us right now."

After opening the 2014 season with an 0-3 mark, Saint Louis has reeled off three straight wins in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu to even it's record at 3-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.

"I think at any program when you lose the first three games you feel down on yourselves, but we've been fortunate to win the last three," Lee said. "We've built some confidence in the team and they're looking forward to the next game and we've just got to keep working, but winning helps, of course."

Tagovailoa and the Crusaders return to Aloha Stadium Saturday, when they play Saint Francis at 7:30 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Lisa Tashiro, Kaiser cross country
Whether it's in the pool or in the hills, Lisa Tashiro is in her comfort zone.

Tashiro, a three-sport athlete at Kaiser, served notice that she should be considered amongst the contenders for the individual cross country state title with her performance amongst an elite field at the Iolani Invitational at Kualoa Ranch Saturday. The junior was the top local finisher in the 3-mile course and helped the Cougars finish third as a team. Tashiro's time of 17 minutes and 42.49 seconds was just 1.29 seconds behind medalist Heidi Smith of Glacier Peak (Wash.).

"We, as coaches, told her that we thought she good chance to win the race regardless of if there were mainland people or not, but of course there's that uncertainty that comes with it that is always part of the equation," said Kaiser coach Dennis Swart, who noted it is Tashiro's first season of cross country. She also competes in swimming and track and field and has been a longtime member of the Kamehameha Swim Club.

"When she was running track we noticed she had pretty good 400-meter speed, so we started training her as a middle-distance runner, then we realized that she's even better at distance events," Swart said. "She really hasn't run that much yet — she leaves for swim practice everyday at 4:15 (p.m.) — so she's doing this all on very low mileage."

Swart, whose daughter also swam at the same club about 10 years ago, said Tashiro's endurance can be traced to her hours in the pool.

"The difference between swimming and running is the amount of stress on the muscles, shins and hips from running, while swimming is almost totally aerobic — there's very little stress on the body, except for shoulders and elbows — and we've been very careful mileage-wise with her before we realize that she doesn't need a whole lot of running to be aerobically fit," Swart said. "I expected that she could compete against the mainland kids and with the rest of the top kids on Oahu and the neighbor islands, but it's one of those things that you just never know because this was her first real big cross country race that she's run in."

Tashiro, who placed fourth in the state in the 3,000-meter run as a sophomore, ran alongside Iolani junior Amanda Beaman for most of the race, but Smith made a late push to edge both local runners.

"In one sense she didn't know what she was doing, she was just running on instincts and ability and just followed what we told her ahead of time," Swart said. "She's so inexperienced that she doesn't know how good she could be. She had no difficulties with the hills, which is always a good sign. I think that was a big confidence builder for her now. I'm proud of her."

Swart said Tashiro's mental make-up gives her an edge — whether she's running or swimming.

"She has a good temperament as far as running goes," Swart said. "Some people are weak mentally, but she's pretty strong mentally and I attribute that to swimming and her club. They have good coaches and they're one of the top clubs. I see a lot of similarities with the kids coming out of that swim program. They're very strong — physically and mentally — and they're not afraid to work."

Tashiro and the Cougars will host the Honolulu Marathon/Kaiser Invitational Saturday morning.
