KAHUKU- It was pure domination by the Red Raiders Friday night.

Kahuku scored touchdowns in all three facets of the game to defeat Waipahu 51-10, in front of a crowd of about 700 at Carleton E. Weimer Field. The Red Raiders, ranked No. 5 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, improved to 2-0 on the year. Waipahu dropped its record to 0-2.

The Red Raiders were coming off a 33-19 win over then No. 8 Kapolei. Kahuku’s three first half penalties against Waipahu were a good sign after committing 18 total in the previous contest.

“I think it was great, we had a good week,” said first-year Kahuku coach Lee Leslie. “I wasn’t happy with (our performance) last week. Too many penalties, a lot of drama that went on in the game – they were so excited, so wound up. That’s not the way we play football. No penalties really to speak off (tonight). The kids played hard.”

Kahuku got its first score of the game after forcing the Marauders’ offense into a three-and-out on their first drive of the game. Red Raider Keala Santiago returned the Waipahu punt 40 yards to the Marauders’ 20-yard line, setting up Tuli Wily-Matagi’s 10-yard keeper for six two plays later. Jess Kanongataa’s PAT gave Kahuku a 7-0 lead in less than two minutes of game time.

The Marauders appeared to have some success defensively after forcing the Red Raiders into a fourth-and-five situation on the next drive. However, Kahuku’s Kesi Ah Hoy ran a fake punt 14 yards to extend the drive. Ah Hoy later cashed in on a four-yard keeper out of the wildcat to put Kahuku up by two scores with 7:41 to go in the first stanza

Ah Hoy’s four-yard run would be the first of three touchdowns that the Red Raiders would score in under a minute of game time. On the Marauders’ next play from scrimmage, Santiago intercepted Waipahu’s Blaise De Asis for a 32-yard pick-six. After the ensuing kickoff, Santiago recorded another interception on Waipahu, this time on Kai Mercado-Aiona. Santiago returned all the way to the Marauders’ one-yard line, setting up Salanoa-Alo Wily’s one-yard counter with 6:52 to go in the opening quarter.

Wily later scored on another touchdown run, this time on a 45-yard scamper during a fourth-and-one situation.

Hirkley Latu capped the Red Raiders scoring in the first quarter with his fumble recovery in the end zone on a bad Marauder snap.

“We’re a good football team. We’re going to get a lot better too. We’re pretty deep on both sides of the ball. Kids are playing good football,” said Leslie.

Kahuku got another defensive score early in the second quarter thanks to a tackle in the end zone made by Ikaika Boyle. This set up Alohi Gilman’s 63-yard return on the ensuing free kick. Jurell Kai’s PAT gave Kahuku a 51-0 lead with 10:34 to go in the first half.

Waipahu got its first score of the game on a Storm De Asis’ 22-yard field goal with 4:42 remaining in the second quarter. The Marauders scored again in the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Mercado-Aiona.

The Red Raiders totaled six sacks in the contest with Boyle leading the way with three. Wily, Lerod Tongi and Lopaka Keoho-Lessary each had one.

Waipahu hopes to bounce back with its first home game of the season against Castle next Friday. Kahuku will travel to Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos stadium next week to take on McKinley in its first road game of the year.

“We just need more games and more reps. We (had) to shut it down after the first quarter so that sort of hurt us a bit, but we’re building,” said Leslie.
