Trojans eager to turn the page on big win

It didn't take long for Mililani football coach Rod York to turn the page on his team's 63-47 win over Saint Louis Saturday night.

York could be overheard emphatically telling his team that "this game is over, it's in the past." It was a message that clearly got through to his players.

"It's still a preseason game, I mean, they weren't settled at quarterback either — it was kind of like us last year," said junior quarterback McKenzie Milton, who threw four touchdown passes and ran in three others against the Crusaders. "They're only going to get better, we're only going to get better and we've just got to take it one game at a time."

The fact that York's offense produced the most points ever allowed in a single game by a Saint Louis team did little but get a sigh of relief out of him.

"It was great, but we've got a lot of things to correct," York said. "I'm drained, the kids are drained, we're happy with the W, but we have a lot of things to correct."

Running back Vavae Malepeai echoed the same sentiment as Milton.

"I feel like we need to buckle down still on both sides of the ball — especially special teams where I had a lot of mistakes that I'll have to correct — but it's just a matter of getting better, working hard in practice and putting in the extra work," said Malepeai, who rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns. "Overall, we still have a lot to work on."

Wide receiver Kalakaua Timoteo was one of two Mililani receivers to go over 150 yards Saturday night,

"I think we did all right, but there's a lot of stuff that we did bad like from running our routes to blocking schemes, holding onto the ball, making the rght reads, wrapping up on defense — there's still a lot to improve on — but this is just the beginning of the year, so we've got a lot of time to work on it," said Timoteo, who finished with 10 receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown.

Leading up to the game, York had no qualms about the fact that he wanted his players to approach the game like a state-championship final. However, it didn't stop the fifth-year coach from taking some calculated risks during the game, including a pair of onside kicks — both of which the Crusaders recovered.

"We needed to see it in the preseason, so like I said from the beginning, win or lose we were going to come in like this was a championship game," York said. "It was open, but we kicked it eight yards (instead of 10), but hey, we need to work on that. They gave us the look and if they give us the look, we'll take it. There was a time I was going to run a fake punt — it was open — but I said we'll save it because we were up by 21 (points) at the same time."

York gave his players Sunday off, but it's clear they are ready to get back to work come Monday.

"We wanted this game bad, but it's over now and we've got to get ready for the OIA," Milton said.

Mililani returns to the field Saturday night when it hosts Kailua.
