MILILANI - Allen Racette caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kenan Sadanaga with 16 seconds left in the game to lift Leilehua to a thrilling 40-33 win over Mililani Friday night.

The Mules, ranked third in the ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings, overcame 19 straight points by the Trojans, who tied at 33 in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-0-1 overall before a crowd of about 4,000 at John Kauinana Stadium. Kenan Sadanaga threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns for Leilehua, which completed the regular season a perfect 6-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference.

On his last pass attempt, Sadanaga received the shotgun snap, rolled out of the pocket to his left and threw a near-perfect pass to Racette in the end zone.

"We knew we had to finish," said Racette, who made a falling catch in the left, rear corner of the end zone for the game-winning score. "(Sadanaga) made a great adjustment on that play, so credit goes to him and the linemen for blocking."

Mililani tied it on a 99-yard touchdown pass from Jarin Morikawa to Erren Jean-Pierre with 6:06 left on the clock and appeared to reclaim the lead for the first time since the first quarter on the ensuing extra point. However, the PAT was wiped off the board due to an illegal formation penalty against the Trojans and the re-kick hooked wide left.

The teams exchanged punts on the next two drives before Leilehua got the ball back with 1:20 left at its own 20-yard line. Sadanaga found Mikal Peyton for a 9-yard gain on third-and-10 to set-up a pivotal fourth down. The drive was extended after Peyton made a diving grab for a 7-yard completion and a first down. Jeremiah Andrade hooked up with Sadanaga for a 22-yard gain on the very next play and a Mililani pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Trojans' 27. On first down, Sadanaga completed an 11-yard pass to Peyton, who finished with 10 catches for 86 yards, before finding Racette on the next play for the go-ahead score.

"The last play we got lucky on the coverage and we finished," said Sadanaga, who completed 30 of his 41 pass attempts. "It was a great drive for us, we had a lot of time left and we do it everyday in practice, so it was pretty much just like practice."

Mules' interim head coach Mark Kurisu praised both teams after the final whistle.

"Like I said earlier, don't expect anything less than that. That's just two great programs competing and I just hope that both communities are proud of each other," said Kurisu, whose team racked up 354 yards of total offense and 22 first downs to win its seventh straight.

Mililani totaled 445 offensive yards, led by Morikawa's 397 passing yards and five TDs.

"All the credit goes to Leilehua, they made the plays, they were the better team tonight and you know, it comes down to those four or five plays in the game that made the difference and they were 5-0 and we were 0-5," said Trojans' head coach Rod York, whose team committed 12 penalties for 95 yards and saw both of its turnovers recycled into Leilehua touchdowns. "We hurt ourselves a lot with some turnovers, dropped passes, some missed passes."

Mililani capitalized on an early turnover to open the scoring with seven minutes and 26 seconds to play in the first quarter. Justin Revilla intercepted a Sadanaga pass at the Mules 40-yard line and the Trojans got on the board with a 33-yard fourth-down pass from Morikawa to DeShawn Duncan-Benson, who outraced the Mules' defense to the end zone. Morikawa tacked on the extra point to make it to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.

Leilehua answered on its ensuing drive with an 11-yard touchdown run by Keannu Kamakaiwi with 5:55 left in the first. The drive, which covered 45 yards in six plays, was extended by an encroachment penalty against Mililani prior to a third-and-4.

The Mules' defense scored a takeaway three plays later when a fumble was recovered by defensive back Shai Pulawa. Sadanaga found Andrade for a 20-yard pick up to set-up a 1-yard TD run by Racette four plays later. Timothy Momiyama's PAT gave Leilehua its first lead at 14-7 late in the first.

After a Trojans' three-and-out, the Mules started at the Mililani 10-yard line following a 43-yard punt return by Andrade. Three plays later, Peyton hauled in an 8-yard TD pass from Sadanaga on third-and-goal. The PAT was no good and the Mules held a 20-7 lead with 11:07 to play in the second.

Mililani closed to within a touchdown following a nine-play, 78-yard drive that was capped by a 30-yard scoring strike from Morikawa to Jean-Pierre with 6:24 on the clock. The play was set-up by a 24-yard completion between Morikawa and Jean-Pierre on a third-and-7. After Morikawa converted the extra point, the Mules' lead was cut to 20-14.

Leilehua added a score just before the half on a 12-yard TD pass from Sadanaga to Peyton, who pulled in the pigskin over his right shoulder. The scoring drive took just 22 seconds after the Mules forced a Mililani three-and-out and got the ball back at the Trojans' 46.

The Mules capitalized on a Trojans' turnover two plays into the third quarter. Morikawa was picked off by Pulawa to give his offense the ball at the Mililani 36-yard line. Sadanaga made Mililani pay seven plays later with his 1-yard TD pass to Penetito Melei. On the scoring play, Sadanaga faked a handoff to his right, rolled to his left and found the wide-open Melei. The two-point conversion was no good and Leilehua led midway through the third, 33-14.

Morikawa led the Trojan offense downfield on its next drive, which covered 80 yards in seven plays and was highlighted by his 53-yard TD pass to Ryan Reedy. The sophomore receiver had one-on-one coverage and beat his defender down the right sideline before hauling in the pass from Morikawa. The PAT was no good to make the score 33-20.

Following a three-and-out by the Mules, the Trojans inched closer on their ensuing drive. Morikawa threw his third TD pass of the game - a 7-yarder to Kaimi Wilson - with 1:12 left in the third quarter to cap a 10-play, 60-yard drive. Following the Morikawa kick, the Trojans trailed, 33-27.

Mililani attempted and recovered an onside kick after the score, but could get no further than the Mules' 43 and punted away. However, Leilehua turned it over in the red zone when the Trojans' Branson Funakoshi stepped in front of a Sadanaga pass in the end zone. He brought it out to the Mules' 2, but a block in the back penalty on the return backed the Trojans inside their 1. On the very next play, Morikawa threw a quick pass to the right to Jean-Pierre, who shed a pair of tacklers 10 yards from the line of scrimmage and raced untouched the rest of the way down the right sideline for the score. Jean-Pierre finished with 158 receiving yards on four catches.

The Trojans advanced to midfield and had two untimed downs due to consecutive defensive penalties against the Mules, but could get no further.

Kurisu said despite the fact that his team had already clinched the Red West's top seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming OIA Tournament, he never thought of resting his starters.

"We're never going to discredit anything or anybody," Kurisu said. "We're never going to sit back and say 'this, that, or the other.' We came to play."

Campbell, which rallied to beat Aiea Friday night, has also earned a first-round bye as the Red West runner-up. Mililani, which fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in league games, will have to await the outcome of Saturday's Waianae-Radford Red West finale to find out its postseason fate. A Waianae win means the Trojans qualify for the 12-team tournament, but finish in a three-way tie for fourth. If Aiea wins, Mililani finishes in a five-way tie for the third, with coin flips determining which four teams advance.
