MANOA — One bounce of the ball was all Mililani needed.

Keri Togami scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jade Yadao-Valdez reached on an error to help Mililani walk off with a thrilling 2-1 win over Campbell in the title game of the DataHouse/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Softball State Championships Friday night.

A crowd of about 2,000 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium witnessed a pitchers' duel between the Trojans' Aubree Kim and the Sabers' Elisa Favela. Kim, who was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, battled fatigue and control issues, but got just enough offensive support.

"This is like the best feeling I've ever experienced right now," said Kim, who went 3-0 and allowed just one earned run and six hits in 21 innings pitched this week. "It's just crazy. It's the best feeling in the world."

Favela had retired the first two Mililani batters in the seventh inning before Togami, the No. 9 hitter, lined a 3-2 pitch to center field for a double. Yadao-Valdez then hit a fly ball to shallow left field that was misplayed by a pair of fielders and allowed Togami to score. An error was assessed to the third baseman on the play.

"The last play I thought it was a routine fly ball and when they were both going for it, I thought it was going to drop and it dropped," Trojans' coach Rose Antonio said. "I couldn't believe my eyes."

Mililani — and their many fans in attendance — erupted in jubilation as Togami crossed the plate.

"I didn't actually see what happened," said Togami, a sophomore right fielder. "I just saw the ball go up and I knew it was two outs and I was in scoring position, so I just ran and right before I hit home plate I just heard everyone cheer, so I knew that was a good thing."

It was the only error in an otherwise well-played game between two familiar foes. Both teams finished the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season with a 9-3 record and tied for first place.

"This was the fourth time we met them and I knew it was going to be like a one-run game with not very much hitting," Antonio said.

The teams split two regular-season meetings — Mililani won 2-1 on March 15 and Campbell won 5-2 on April 10. The Trojans beat the Sabers, 1-0, in an OIA semifinal game two weeks ago.

"Pretty much all of our games against Campbell have been like this," said Kim, who scattered six hits in her third complete game in as many days. She struggled at times — with two walks, three wild pitches and two hit batters — but struck out six and got out of a few jams. "They're an excellent team and I had no doubt that they were going to put up a great fight."

Kim retired eight of the first nine batters she faced, but ran into trouble with two outs in the top of the third inning. She walked Cydney Curran then allowed a single by Chardonnay Pantastico and hit Caragh Morris on a 1-0 pitch to load the bases. After a brief meeting with her infielders, Kim got Favela to strikeout to end the threat.

"When we see her struggling, we call time to kind of relax her, tell her that we got her back and she's got ours and she just pulled through for us," Yadao-Valdez said of Kim. "When she responded to us, we responded back by getting her runs."

One inning later however, the Sabers did get on the board. Nashlynn Anguay led off the top of the fourth with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Kim limited the damage done, getting Darrien Robinson to ground out for the second out and striking out Ashlyn Yagin looking to get out of the inning.

"Honestly, it was wearing on me, all those pitches, but I didn't care at that point. I was going to finish the game and I knew we could do it," said Kim, a sophomore right-hander.

The Trojans finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Maya Yoshiura was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Karly Macadangdang and came home on an RBI single by Kristen Ishii to tie it.

Campbell got the leadoff hitter on base when Sierra Mariano reached on an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robinson and third on a wild pitch. However, Kim once again got away unharmed with a pair of pop outs.

"I've been there a lot of times and I just tell myself that those are the situations that I have to thrive in the best," said Kim.

Just before Togami doubled, Kylyn Sasaki turned on an inside pitch and hit a high, towering drive that sent Mariano back to the right field fence for the second out.

"It gave us some hope," Antonio said. "She took that and it carried. She battled through and I think anything could have happened."

Favela, who had thrown three consecutive two-hitters since Tuesday, allowed five hits, struck out two and walked one.

"This one is hard to swallow, because we didn't execute on that last play," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "We went through these situations all year and it's a matter of communication and it didn't happen and it fell in. Sometimes you gotta get lucky, too."

It is the Trojans' third state championship in school history and second under Antonio. Mililani (15-3) finished the season by winning their final eight games.

"This one is sweet because this is the first year that we won the West, we won OIAs and we won states," Antonio said. "Usually when we win OIAs, we don't win the state, but this year we won all three. It's amazing."

Campbell (15-5) was making its third appearance in a state final in the last five years. The Sabers won their only state championship in school history in 2010.
