Villanueva-Hermosura, Kiessling collect top honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura, Campbell baseball
Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura factored into each one of Campbell's three big wins en route to its second consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division championship.

The junior first baseman went 6 for 11 (.545 batting average) at the plate in wins over Kaiser, Roosevelt and Kaiser. He hit a double in each game and drove in a combined four RBIs.

"He had great at-bats in all three games last week," Sabers' coach Rory Pico said of Villanueva-Hermosura, who is the clean-up hitter. "He was clutch for us in the first game, when he got that game-winning RBI, and in the games against Roosevelt and Kailua he got big hits, key RBIs that either put us ahead or gave us some room."

As the Red West's top seed, Campbell has a first-round bye Wednesday and opened its title defense by hosting Kaiser Thursday. The streaking Cougars led for most of the game, but the Sabers tied it with two runs in the sixth inning. The game reached the bottom of the ninth before Villanueva-Hermosura hit a one-out walk-off double to left centerfield that scored Keola Himan to help Campbell escape, 3-2.

In a 9-3 semifinal win over Roosevelt Friday, Villanueva-Hermosura paced the Sabers' offense, which got rapped out 11 hits, by going 2 for 3 with a two-RBI double. He also scored a run.

The Saturday's championship game against Red East top-seed Kailua, Villanueva-Hermosura, a lefty, moved to the mound as the starting pitcher. He went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, struck out six, walked none and was the winning pitcher in the 9-3 win over the Surfriders. He also batted 3 for 4 and drove in the Sabers' first run with an first-inning single.

"He pitched well, mixed it up and what was good is he was able to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes," said Pico, who noted the presence of termites at Hans L'Orange Park Saturday night. "He had some difficulty spotting some of his fastballs, but he got refocused in the game. I really think the termites bothered him, but he settled down and made his pitches when he had to."

Pico said some soreness in Villanueva-Hermosura's shoulder forced a change in the weekend pitching order.

"As long as he was healthy enough, we were going to start him for one of the games," Pico said. "Initially I had him penciled in for the second game, but he had a sore shoulder on Tuesday, so then I was thinking if we could get to Saturday, we were looking for him to the starter that day."

The Sabers' three-man rotation of Ian Kahaloa, Kila Kapihe and Hermosura-Villanueva is arguably the toughest statewide.

Kahaloa is 5-0 with a 0.82 ERA with a 46 to 6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Kapihe is 4-0 with a 1.79 ERA and also has a save to his credit and Villanueva-Hermosura is 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA. He also has a save and has struck out 28 batters and walked just three this season.

Kahaloa struck out 16 batters and allowed four hits and two walks in nine innings against Kaiser and Kapihe scattered seven hits in five innings against Roosevelt.

It was Campbell's four overall league crown, which earned it a seeded berth in next week's Division I state tournament.

"We did win last year, but we had a lot of seniors that carried us last year and a lot of these guys had very limited roles, so I think they enjoyed this one much more because they played a bigger part in it," Pico said. "They all work very hard and they were happy of their accomplishment."

The Sabers, who are ranked at the top of the ScoringLive/OC16 Baseball Power Rankings, will have one of four first-round byes when the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Championships open next Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium.

"There's so many good teams in the state like Waiakea and Hilo, Baldwin, Saint Louis, Mid-Pacific, so I think any league champion could end up being the No. 1 seed," Pico said. "To me, as long as you get the bye, it doesn't really matter if you're the one or the four, you just want that bye."

Female Athlete of the Week: Roxy Kiessling, Punahou water polo
Punahou capped an undefeated season Saturday with a 5-3 win over rival Iolani in the title game of the Stanford Carr Development/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Water Polo State Championships.

Leading the way for the Buffanblu was senior Roxy Kiessling, who scored three goals, including the go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter.

"I believe she's been doing that all season for us and those kinds of things we don't even have to tell her," Punahou coach Ken Smith said of Kiessling. "She's to that point now, which has been really good for us, that she will just take it upon herself."

Kiessling scored two goals in a 12-3 quarterfinal win over Kapolei Thursday and netted three more goals in an 18-4 semifinal win over Mililani Friday and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

"I'm just extremely thankful," Kiessling said. "This has been an amazing year. The whole season and just my four years at Punahou — it's a great way to end it."

It was the seventh straight state crown and ninth overall for the Buffanblu in the 11-year history of the tournament. All of their titles have come under Smith, the longtime coach.

Kiessling said that while each year was different, Smith was the common denominator in each championship.

"That was such a great way to end the season after all of our hard work and my years with coach Ken," Kiessling said. "He's such a great coach — I can't stress that enough — he's so great. We're so lucky to have such a great coach and the way he coached us just helped us pull to the top."

Smith credit the seniors for stepping up after much of last year's team graduated, including Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year, Turner Wong.

"We lost really good seniors from last year — Turner Wong, Lauren Boyer — and it's so hard to replace them, but then these guys come in and they stepped up and just take over," Smith said. "They're going to be hard to replace, but we have nine returners and they are just fired up. They are so great to work with. I don't' think we've every had a team that I've enjoyed working with more than these guys, because of their work ethic and their attitude throughout the entire season."

It was the fifth time this season that Punahou beat Iolani.

"They're always tough against us and no matter what their record's been during the year, you know they're going to come to play, they're going to put up a great battle," Smith said of the Raiders. "They're well-coached, they train hard and it just makes it exciting because you just can't take anything for granted."
