Tiffany Thompson served six aces and spiked three kills yesterday afternoon as Hawai'i Baptist swept past Saint Francis, 25-12, 25-15, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball showdown at Punahou.

The victory before a live statewide TV audience on OC16 completed a perfect 9-0 run through the ILH Division II regular season-robin for the Eagles. The Saints fell to 8-1. The second round -- a single-elimination tournament -- begins next week.

"This feels amazing, we had great competition all season," said Thompson, a junior outside hitter. "We worked hard for this."

The hard work paid immediate dividends yesterday, as Thompson had two kills and two aces in helping HBA jump out to a stunning 9-1 lead in the first set. The margin quickly grew to 13-2 and 17-4 as the Eagles added two more aces and Saint Francis committed seven hitting errors.

"It was a really great way to start off, because we usually start out slow," Thompson said. "Saint Francis seemed flat, but we kept working hard and we served tough."

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in Game 2 on an ace by Jessica Rossi, but that was short-lived as Thompson served two more aces to spark a 6-0 run that put Hawai'i Baptist ahead, 7-2.

Another ace by CJ Asuncion later made it 11-5, and three straight errors by Saint Francis pushed the lead to 14-6. Two more aces from Thompson made it 18-9, and the Saints could not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

"Saint Francis is way more athletic than we are, that's plainly obvious," Eagles coach Myles Shioji said. "So we had to focus on the fundamentals -- serving and passing. We worked at it during practice so much, the girls are probably sick of it. But that's what we needed to do."

Saints coach Sonja Samsonas said her team may have succumbed to nerves.

"I think being on TV, and the big crowd, got to them," Samsonas said. "We knew that serve-receive would be important, and even during warm-ups I was feeling confident. But when it became TV time, they got jittery."
