Kamehameha-'Iolani headlines ILH matinee trio

After a narrow 17-14 loss against Punahou Saturday, Kamehameha returns to the field against 'Iolani in one of three inter-divisional matinee games in the ILH this weekend.

The Warriors, who are sixth in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings, visit Eddie Hamada Field on the 'Iolani campus for a 2:30 p.m. game against the defending Division II state champs.

In other ILH games, Pac-Five visits No. 4 Punahou and No. 7 Saint Louis tussles with Damien at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

On the neighbor islands, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation begins its second round and the Maui Interscholastic League returns to action this weekend after a hiatus for the county fair.

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

No. 6 Kamehameha at No. 9 'Iolani, Saturday, 2:30 p.m.

The Warriors (4-3 overall, 3-1 ILH) had won four straight games before being derailed, 17-14, by Punahou Saturday. In the loss - its first since Aug. 20 - Kamehameha lost four fumbles and committed 11 penalties for 97 yards. RB Tyler Meditz carried 17 times for 71 yards and scored on a 5-yard TD run that brought his team within a field goal in the fourth quarter. LB Kory Rasmussen registered one sack and intercepted two passes in a losing effort.

The reigning four-time Division II state champion Raiders (4-3, 2-2), who were off last week, lead the ILH's Div. II standings with three games to play. In its last game, 'Iolani staged a miraculous 21-point comeback against Saint Louis, but ultimately fell, 42-35. QB Reece Foy (1,435 pass yards, 11 TDs, 6 INTs) leads all of Division II in pass yards and is third overall in the state. WR Tanner Nishioka (409 receiving yards, 5 TDs) caught six passes for 110 yards against Saint Louis.

Kickoff at Eddie Hamada Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

No.  7 Saint Louis vs. Damien at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, Saturday, 3 p.m.

The Crusaders (5-2, 2-2) are coming off a bye week and are probably getting healthier by the day following a rash of injuries. QB Kawai Mook-Garcia (1,424 pass yards, 12 TDs, 6 INTs) and RB Kamana Pimental (688 rush yards, 8 TDs) lead the Saint Louis offense, which averages 377.3 yards and 32.7 points per game. Saint Louis closes its schedule with Kamehameha and Punahou, respectively, in the next two weeks. The Monarchs (0-6) celebrated homecoming at Aloha Stadium Saturday, but would really like to celebrate a victory. Under first-year head coach Eddie Klaneski, Damien has averaged just 4.5 points on offense and allowed 37.7 on defense.

Pac-Five at No. 4 Punahou, Saturday, 3 p.m.

Just when the Wolf Pack (4-3, 1-3) picked up their first league win, it now has to visit the first-place Buffanblu (7-1, 4-0). Pac-Five snapped a three-game losing skid with its 34-13 win over Damien Saturday, in which RB/WR Keoni Tom-Millare scored five rushing touchdowns. The junior carried 18 times for 238 yards (13.2 per rush). Punahou, ranked fourth in the SL/OC16 Power Rankings, is coming off a 17-14 win over Kamehameha Saturday, and has won five straight dating back to a Sept. 3. RB Steven Lakalaka (649 rush yards, 7 TDs) is a workhorse in the backfield. Against Kamehameha, he ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Honoka'a at Ka'u, Friday, 6 p.m.

The Dragons (3-5 overall, 1-3 BIIF) have been knocked around in their last three games - all losses: 42-7 at Kamehameha-Hawaii, 65-7 to Hawaii Prep and 57-0 at Konawaena. But, their offense has shown signs of life this season in a 63-0 win over Ka'u and a 66-24 win against Kohala. The Trojans (1-4, 1-3) picked up their first win over Kohala Friday, 28-22.

Kohala at Kamehameha-Hawaii, Friday, 7 p.m.

The Warriors (7-1, 4-1) find themselves tied atop the league's Division II standings with Konawaena and Hawaii Prep following their 27-24 loss at HPA Saturday. Kamehameha-Hawaii led 24-20 in the fourth quarter, but lost it on a fumble that was recovered in the end zone by Ka Makani. The Cowboys (0-5), who are one of two teams in the BIIF still winless, score just 12.0 points while allowing opponents 37.8 points per game.

Hawaii Prep at Konawaena, Friday, 7 p.m.

The teams have identical league records and are tied for second to begin the BIIF's second round. Ka Makani (5-2, 4-1) have won four straight - including Saturday's stunner over Kamehameha-Hawaii - and five of their last six games. Running back Kawohi Schutte (352 rush yards, 6 TDs) averages 7.7 yards per carry and also does double-duty on defense. The Wildcats (6-1, 4-1) are coming off a 57-0 shutout of Honoka'a Friday and are winners of their last three contests.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

No. 8 Baldwin at Kamehameha-Maui, Friday, 7 p.m.

The Bears, ranked eighth in the SL/OC16 Power Rankings, take a perfect league record (4-1 overall, 4-0 MIL) into Friday's game against the Division-II Warriors (1-4, 1-3). Baldwin has rolled over its opponents, scoring an average of 35.2 points while holding opponents to 12.2 per game. Running back Vetekina Malafu (459 rush yards, 6 TDs) has helped the Bears average over 200 rushing yards a game. Kamehameha-Maui has been outscored 62-14 in its last two games.

Maui at King Kekaulike, Saturday, 7 pm.

The Sabers (1-4, 1-3) had a week off to scheme for Na Alii (1-4, 1-3), who have not played a game since Sept. 17. Maui has lost three straight, most recently a 42-6 rout at the hands of rival Baldwin. The Sabers average just 13.0 points per game offensively, while allowing 29.0 on defense. King Kekaulike, whose last game was a 43-0 loss to Baldwin, has similar struggles, scoring an average of 8.2 points per game while allowing 26.0.

KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Kauai vs. Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium, Saturday, 4:30 p.m.

These two teams met just three weeks ago at Vidinha Stadium in a game that was postponed due to darkness. That game will only be made up if it has any bearing on the KIF title, however, both squads are currently looking up at Waimea at 3-1. The Red Raiders (0-2) are last, while the Warriors (1-1) sit in second place. Kapa'a's rallying against Waimea fell short and it lost 21-14 while Kauai enjoyed a bye week.
