Pac-Five's Tanaka, MPI's Kumabe honored as top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Lee Tanaka, Pac-Five baseball
Lee Tanaka made quite the splash in just his second pitching appearance on the varsity level Friday.

After being called up from the junior varsity just a few weeks ago, the sophomore right-hander got his first start against the reigning Division I state champions and came through with a big performance. Tanaka threw a complete-game and allowed one run on four hits to lead Pac-Five to a 4-1 upset over then-No. 1 Mid-Pacific — its first victory of the season.

"He was throwing strikes and in the right locations where we wanted it," Wolf Pack coach Dennis Fukunaga said. "He gave up some hits — (MPI) reported four hits, but we counted more than that — but they were hitting it to somebody. I think that's why he was so successful. It wasn't like he shut them out, but we were making plays and everything just fell in place. We played good defense and (Tanaka) put up a good game on the mound."

Tanaka, who stands 5-foot-5 and attends Hawaii Baptist, said all the right things to Fukunaga before the game and exceeded expectations when it was all said and done.

"He's very composed for a sophomore," Fukunaga said. "I told him, 'I got you penciled in as our starter against Mid-Pac. What's your answer?' He said, 'Well coach i'll give it my best' and that's what I wanted to hear. If he said I'm not ready or he had to think about, then I would have told him he's not the right guy, but all we ask is to go out there and give it your best. I knew he would be all right — I didn't realize he'd go seven (innings), because none of our pitchers had gone seven this year. I was just hoping he would give us three or four good ones and he went seven innings, 104 pitches. Just amazing."

Fukunaga joked that Tanaka could be considered his staff ace after just one career start.

"I feel good for him. He's a really good kid and a very good student of the game," Fukunaga said. "He's very quiet, but he shows everything on the field, in a way, and that's what I like. He's the smallest guy on our team and did the biggest damage. He works hard every single day, so he deserves this."

Pac-Five's offense did the job with eight hits off of Mid-Pacific pitching, including Kai Sasaki's 2-run home run.

"We had some timely hits," Fukunaga said. "We were hitting even in the games that we lost. In fact, against Saint Louis, we lost to them, but we outhit them by three hits, but against Mid-Pac I think timely hits were the difference. Everything seemed to click at the same time."

The Wolf Pack's celebration was short-lived however, as they took the field again Saturday afternoon.

"I told the boys, 'You celebrate, because to beat the No. 1 in the state of Hawaii, you celebrate,'" Fukunaga said. "Those guys really deserve it. Not only was it our first win, but look who we beat. That's an accomplishment by itself. They were happy, you could see it, but we had to come back the next day to play again."

Pac-Five, which has alternated between Division I and Division II in each of the last four seasons, sits in last place at 1-8 in the six-team D1 Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

"We set-up goals at the beginning and i told the kids we play each team three rounds and we're playing with the big boys, so if we can beat every team maybe one time, that's a success already," Fukunaga said. "That way it makes it easier for the boys to just go out there and play and not have to think that we have to win them all."

Tanaka and the Wolf Pack play fourth-ranked Iolani, third-ranked Mid-Pacific and fifth-ranked Kamehameha on consecutive days (Thursday through Saturday) this week at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

Female Athlete of the Week: Jenna Kumabe, Mid-Pacific softball
No team had a Spring Break like Mid-Pacific did and no Owl had a better couple of games at the plate than Jenna Kumabe.

The junior second baseman drove in five runs and scored five runs to help Mid-Pacific beat then-No. 4 Iolani Wednesday and Saint Francis Saturday. She hit a home run in each game, which were both big wins for the Owls. They beat the Raiders 16-3 and topped the Saints 16-5.

"Prior to that she was in a little bit of a slump," Mid-Pacific coach Alan Inaba said of Kumabe, who bats leadoff. "She was struggling a little, so to her credit, her and Lindsey Matoi, our shortstop, would stay after practice and come early before games to get in some extra hitting and take some extra cuts."

Inaba was optimistic that Kumabe would break out of her slump soon.

"I told her to stick with her swing and look at her pitch selection and then she had that big home run against Iolani that got her going," said Inaba, who noted her importance to his team. "Jenna is one of our captains and she's one of the vocal ones, so along with her actions on the field, she's also the one who kind of fires everybody up. She's kind of important for us."

In their three losses this season, the Owls have scored a combined seven runs. During their current win-streak, they are outscoring teams 38 to 10.

"I think a lot has to do with confidence," Inaba said MPI's hot streak. "At the beginning of the year when we were struggling, they were pressing, but now they know that if they don't get a hit, the person behind them will and it relaxes them."

Despite having won two of the last three Division I state championships, the Owls are embracing the role of underdog.

"We just take it one game at a time — one pitch at a time, one out a time — and not worrying too much about down the road," Inaba said. "We're the underdog, so there's less pressure — although I hope this isn't going to jinx us — but you can't worry about what's going to happen, you just have to worry about what you can control, do your best and whatever happens, happens."

Kumabe helps set the tone at the top of the order, but has been buoyed by several veterans behind her.

Nicole Lopez, a junior third baseman, also hit a pair of homeruns, drove in five runs and scored six runs in last week's wins. Inaba also mentioned seniors Taylor Ann Oda and Matoi as other bats in the lineup.

"I would say we're pretty solid from top to bottom," Inaba said. "We don't really rely on one person — we're not just relying on Jenna, but when she starts off the game or inning with a hit then it kind of carries over from there. Hitting is contagious."

Kumabe and the Owls lay eight-ranked Iolani Wednesday and second-ranked Maryknoll Saturday.
