HAWAI'I KAI - Mark Kuga's two out, two-run double in the top of the sixth inning snapped a 5-all game to lift Moanalua past Kaiser, 7-5, Monday at the Cougars' field.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East baseball game was a makeup for Saturday's postponement because of inclement weather. Na Menehune improved to 2-1 and the Cougars dropped to 1-2.

Four Kaiser errors accounted for five unearned runs.

Kuga led Moanalua with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring two runs and driving in two with his double. Kristian Yap batted 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

"He's been kind of popping the ball up and we worked with him to stay on top of the ball more and squaring it up," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said of Kuga's hitting. "The hard work paid off. You can see the success."

Curt Clivio had a two-run triple and Kelan Yoshioka added an RBI triple for the Cougars.

Tyler Fujimoto picked up the win, allowing five runs, nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Dez Oki-Takahashi pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing a single, to notch the save.

Na Menehune increased their lead to 5-1 with two runs in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom of the frame the Cougars sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four to tie the game.

"I told these guys, I'm not worried about their heart," Kaiser coach Mark Rasmussen said. "They're always in the game, they're always in the battle to the end. Today, defensively, we didn't do too well."

With one out in the top of the sixth, Casey Isa beat out a single to shortstop. After Nicholas Enrico flied out to right, Yap walked. Catcher Brayton Sakai reached on fielding error by second baseman Kamalu Simeona, who started at third base and changed positions when Noah Sakatani relieved starting pitcher Aaron Oda in the second inning, to load the bases. Kuga ripped a double to right-center, but courtesy runner Reyn Oumaye was thrown out at home trying to score to end the inning, but Na Menehune took a 7-5 lead.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the sixth against Fujimoto. With runners at first and second and one out, Yoshioka grounded to shortstop Enrico, who turned an inning-ending double play.

Moanalua's first two runs of the game were unearned.

In the top of the first, Isa was hit by Oda's first pitch of the game and took second on Enrico's sacrifice. With Yap at the plate, Isa took third on a wild pitch, but catcher Yoshioka's throw was errant, allowing Isa to score before the next two players grounded out.

Kuga led off the top of the second with single to center, stole second and went to third when Fujimoto grounded out to first. With the infield playing in with Kyle Aganos at the plate, Kuga broke for home and Aganus swung and missed at the pitch. Kuga retreated to third, but scored when Yoshioka's throw was wild to make it 2-0.

Moanalua added a run in the third. Drake Fukushima led off with a double to left-center before Isa walked. Enrico reached on a bunt single between the mound and third to load the bases. After running a 1-0 count on Yap, Oda was lifted for Sakatani, who allowed an RBI single. Sakai flied out to right and Isa was gunned down at the plate trying to score.

The Cougars got a run in the bottom of the third. Simeona reached on a chop single to short. An out later, he took third on a balk and scored on Shawn Miyashiro's single before Oda grounded out to first.

Moanalua increased its lead with two in the fifth. Yap led off with a single and an out later, took second on Kuga's single. Yap scored and Kuga went to third when Fujimoto reached on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Simeona. Kuga scored on a wild pitch before pinch hitter Cody Azuma fouled out to first, as Moanalua took a 5-1 lead.

"I thought Noah (Sakatani) did a hell of job for us," Rasmussen said. "We didn't help him out. He threw really well, but we made too many defensive mistakes."

Sakatani pitched five innings of relief, allowing four runs (one earned), seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in taking the loss.

The Cougars stormed back with four in the bottom of the fifth. Royce Narahara led off with a four-pitch walk and an out later, scored on Yoshioka's triple to left. Miyashiro reached first on a fielder's choice grounder to third baseman Adam Tanoue, who threw out Yoshioka trying to score.

Oda's bunt single to third moved Miyashiro to second and both scored on Clivio's triple to left-center to pull Kaiser to 5-4. Luis Omphroy's single scored Clivio to tie the game before Jeshua Bitanga flied out to left.

The Cougars were without shortstop/pitcher Michael Austin, who is spending spring break on the Mainland looking at prospective colleges. It was planned with the anticipation he would not miss any games because the Cougars' next game is Saturday against Kalaheo, Rasmussen said. But Austin could not anticipate last Saturday's postponement would move the game to Monday, when he had already left for the Mainland.
