MILILANI - Some home cooking was just what the doctor ordered for Mililani.

Before a homecoming crowd of about 3,000 at John Kauinana Stadium, the Trojans pummeled visiting Kapolei, 34-0, in a must-win Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference game Friday night. Mililani, which played its last three games on the road, snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Red West.

"Any win is great, but this one is on the boys," Trojans' head coach Rod York said. "They won it tonight - they played a hell of a game. Like I said, it's on the players: they have to execute and when they do, that's what it looks like."

Kapolei completed its regular season with a 3-5 record, 2-4 in the Red West.

"I don't know what to make out of a game like this," said Hurricanes' head coach Darren Hernandez, whose team manufactured just 87 offensive yards and nine first downs. "We lost our fifth starting quarterback (Mason Alfaro) to a concussion and we had seven starters on defense out with injuries, so it's tough, but you know, you've got to play with the guys you've got and that's the way it goes."

The win keeps Mililani in the hunt for a berth in the 12-team OIA Red Division Tournament. Kapolei will also have to await next weekend's results to determine its fate.

The Trojans were efficient on offense - going 7-of-12 on third downs and 2-of-2 on fourth - while racking up 319 yards, including 232 passing from quarterback Jarin Morikawa. The junior threw three touchdowns and finished 17 of 27 with one interception. DeShawn Duncan-Benson was on the receiving end of nine of those passes for 150 yards - both game highs - and a 54-yard touchdown.

"(After the last two losses), everyone was getting kind of down and this was a must-win for us to get into the playoffs, so everybody came out firing," said Duncan-Benson, who entered the game leading the state in both catches and receiving yards.

Mililani opened the scoring on its first possession, punching in a 1-yard touchdown run by Akana Arquette, to cap a 12-play, 57-yard drive that took four minutes and twenty seconds off the clock. The Trojans twice converted on third downs on the drive - including a 22-yard connection between Morikawa and Kaimi Wilson to set-up first-and-goal. After an eight-yard pick-up on third-and-goal, Arquette put his team on the board with his fourth-down TD run. Morikawa kicked the extra point and with 4:30 left in the first quarter, Mililani led, 7-0.

Following Kapolei's fourth punt in as many drives, the Trojans extended their lead on Morikawa's 9-yard TD pass to Wilson. On the scoring play - a third down with goal-to-go - Wilson ran a skinny-post from the right of the formation and hooked up with Morikawa in the end zone to cap a 10-play, 50-yard drive. However, the PAT was blocked to make the score, 13-0, with 2:01 left in the first half.

The Trojans added a special-teams score just before halftime when a punt by Kapolei's Micah Paris was blocked by Mililani's Michael Atuaia - and recovered by teammate Ryan Barsatan - in the end zone with 36 seconds left on the clock. Morikawa's PAT was good to give the Trojans a 20-0 halftime lead.

Morikawa helped Mililani go ahead, 27-0, on the first drive of the second half. After four straight rushes by Kaimi Andres-Kamakau, Morikawa found slotback Ryan Reedy for a 34-yard touchdown and Elizabeth Gustafson tacked on the extra point. Reedy hauled in the pass near the Hurricanes' 20-yard line, cut inside of a defensive back, before dragging another across the goal line. Andres-Kamakau finished with 55 yards on 11 carries.

On the Trojans' ensuing drive, they benefited from an encroachment penalty against the Hurricanes to convert on a pivotal fourth-and-1 and two plays later, Duncan-Benson left the defense in the dust on a 54-yard scoring strike from Morikawa. Gustafson's PAT with 5:15 left in the third closed out the scoring.

"Our defense played well ... coaching staff did a great job of preparing them," said York.

Mililani recorded four sacks - all in the first half - on three different Kapolei quarterbacks and stuffed the Hurricanes' triple-option attack all night. Kapolei entered the game averaging over 156 rush yards per game, but was held to 1.6 yards per carry Friday night.

"We knew that their fullbacks are pretty good and pretty strong and they like to (establish) the dive, so it was good to be able to hold them to zero (points)," said linebacker Dayton Furuta, whose sack for a 6-yard loss late in the second quarter helped set-up the blocked punt on the very next play.

The Trojans fell, 7-6, at Aiea last week on a failed extra point and were whacked, 32-12, at Campbell the week before. Mililani entered the game averaging under seven yards rushing a game, but manufactured 90 yards against the Hurricanes.

"It felt great because it made it easier on us as receivers because the secondary would have to give us respect as well as the running game and if we can get both the running game and the passing game going, we should be unstoppable," Duncan-Benson said.

The Trojans host first-place Leilehua Friday at Kauinana Stadium in the Red West finale for both teams.
