WAIPAHU — Inspired by her senior teammates, freshman Jordan Hill came up with a game-winner.

Hill scored on a header in the eighth minute of overtime to help Aiea to a 1-0 win over Kaiser in a first-round game of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Division I Girls Soccer State Championships at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Wednesday.

Na Alii, who finished sixth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Tournament last week, improved to 11-4 and advanced to Thursday's quarterfinal round, where they will play Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ and tournament No. 4 seed Konawaena.

"We really wanted to go past the first day, we want to actually win it," said Hill, a midfielder/forward. "I really wanted to win. It's our last year for the seniors and I know they want it badly and I want to win it for them."

Aiea recorded 13 shots on goal — including three in the overtime period — to seven for Kaiser.

"We were just trying to play our style of soccer," Na Alii coach Benji Villaflor. "We know that this is the best in the state and every team is going to be tough, so we told our girls that if we play the way that we want them to play and we train them to play, with hard work, we should be fine. So it was kind of delightful to see them play that kind of soccer today and control the game."

However, it was the Cougars who were controlling much of the early possession, recording three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Both teams kept busy on the offensive end in the first half, but neither was able to score and the match remained scoreless at halftime.

Aiea's Raisa Strom-Okimoto, who entered the game with 22 goals scored, had a number of scoring chances in the second half — none better than her 25-yard, right-footed blast in the 69th minute that hooked just wide of the left post. Strom-Okimoto's teammate, Tamera Mikamura put a shot on goal with her header from just outside the six-yard box, but Kaiser goalie Corina Edgington made one of her 11 saves in the game.

The score remained 0-0 after regulation and until the 88th minute when junior Keani Napuunoa served up a corner kick from the right side into the six-yard box, where Hill connected with a header that went to the left of Edgington and inside the post.

"I just had to go right there and then Keani hit a good cross," Hill said. "It was perfectly-placed for where I was."

Hill's game-winning goal was especially surprising, given that Na Alii don't spend much time on set pieces.

"We don't really work on corners or anything, we're just kind trying to get it into the penalty area, just run on to it, try and get something solid on it — a foot, head — something solid on it to just redirect the ball toward goal and that's basically what happened," Villaflor said.

Kaiser coach Adolph Samuels said a lack of practice time leading up to the game didn't help their chances.

"We didn't really get much practice in — the rain was kind of bad and we never got to workout — so that really kind of hurt us to not get any running in," Samuels said. "I was trying to save their legs, but I think that was kind of the wrong decision because they looked really flat today. I give all the credit to Aiea though, they wanted to win today and they played unreal today."

It was the second consecutive loss for the Cougars, who lost to Pearl City in penalty kicks for the OIA championship in their last game before states.

"We had a long talk with them about bouncing back and not letting what happened affect them, but today our team just looked flat and tired," Samuel said. "We weren't really fast to the ball and I think that's what the difference was; Aiea beat us to the ball, they made unreal plays today."

Kaiser, which fell to 11-3, will play Maui in a consolation game at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Aiea and Konawaena will play at 3 p.m. in the main stadium.
