PEARL CITY — Gabriel Pinheiro-Alves scored on a 25-yard blast seven minutes into overtime to lead Kahuku to a stunning 2-1 win over Campbell in a first-round game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red (Division I) Conference Tournament Tuesday night.

Pinheiro-Alves' goal — his seventh of the season — broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Red Raiders to their fourth consecutive victory and into Wednesday's quarterfinal round, where they will play West top-seed Mililani.

"I was just hoping that it went it and then luckily I got a good shot off and it went in," said Pinheiro-Alves, a junior forward.

Kahuku improved to 8-3 on a blustery night at Pearl City's Bino Nieves Stadium and can earn one of the OIA's six state-tournament berths with a win Wednesday. Campbell ends its season at 6-5.

"I almost got a heart attack just watching that," Red Raiders' coach Richard Oei said of the frantic finish. "That's one thing about overtime: If it goes in, that's it. (Pinheiro-Alves) got a good shot on the goal and luckily enough he took a glance up to see where the goal is to at least put it on frame and if it goes in, it goes in."

Pinheiro-Alves' goal was especially surprising, given that the Sabers were largely dominated the second-half possession. Campbell had the edge in nearly every statistical category. It recorded 10 shots on goal to Kahuku's seven and an astronomical nine corner kickers to just two for Kahuku.

"To be honest, they outplayed us, but we got a lucky break and Gabriel was wide open, he took the shot and it just dipped right over the keeper," said Jake Samsel, who scored the Red Raiders' first goal in the 21st minute. "We just got a lucky break and we just played hard with them the whole time."

Samsel scored his team-high 12th goal just past the midpoint of the first half to open the scoring. He fired a right-footed shot from about 10 yards out to the left side of the net, past the Campbell goal keeper.

"Their center back on their left side was just creeping up a little bit so our center-mid, Peter (Hyatt) — I just asked for the ball and he sent it right over the top of his head — and I just took a touch to settle it and then shot it back post and it was a solid shot," said Samsel, a senior forward.

Minutes into the second half, a handball was called against Kahuku in its own 18-yard box, which gave Campbell a penalty kick. Kohl Gonzales took — and converted — the shot, which went to the left side of the goal and tied it at 1.

All nine of the Sabers' corner kicks came after halftime — eight in the second half alone — including five in a 14-minute stretch.

"They completely had the game, but I luckily had the open space and coach always says, 'Take the shot from the 18(-yard line), we're going to get this' and that's what I tried to do," Pinheiro-Alves said.

Kahuku goalie Braxton Medeiros made 10 saves (six in the first half and four in the second). Just minutes before the end of regulation, Medeiros punched away a Campbell shot on goal just over the crossbar.

"He played unbelievable," Oei said of his junior keeper. "They're always underestimating how small he is, but it's his domain. He knows where to jump, when to jump, he's got all these angle covered and he has an unbelievable leap."

Campbell, the fifth seed out of the Western Division, saw their three-game win streak snapped.

Kahuku, the No. 4-seed out of the East, has scored at least one goal in every game this season. The Red Raiders, who have now outscored opponents 39 to 18 this season, meets undefeated Mililani at John Kauinana Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Note: Thursday's Red semifinals, as well as Friday's Red and White championship games will be played at Mililani. All four games will be televised live by OC16. The games were originally slated for Kapolei, but broadcast issues forced the move.
