Top Performers
Pac-Five's Wong, Punahou's Fey named top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Joshua Wong, Pac-Five soccer
Joshua Wong is moving on up. The sophomore forward made the move from defender to forward a few games ago and it has translated well for the Pac-Five soccer team.

Wong scored his second goal of the season Saturday, which was the difference in the Wolf Pack's 1-0 win over Punahou.

"He was very excited to score," Pac-Five coach Robert Smock said. "We started out with him on defense and just switched him to forward about three games ago and he's really made a difference up there. He's very good with the ball, he steals it well, he doesn't lose it and he's very aggressive versus fullbacks."

Wong's goal, which he scored in the 55th minute, came off an assist from fellow forward GeRysand Cabanilla.

"We had a little bit of a counter attack going and GeRysand got the ball on the wing, crossed it into the middle and Joshua happened to be in the right place at the right time," Smock said. "He put a one-timer into the goal and beat the keeper with his right foot from about eight to 10 yards away."

The win marked the first time Pac-Five beat Punahou in eight seasons — since Smock's first year as head coach — and also keeps the Wolf Pack in the hunt for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second state-tournament berth.

"If we can win out, we have a chance and that's what we're shooting for," Smock said. "I believe we're playing our best soccer right now. We're doing much better in possession and we've got a really young team, but they're learning quick and they're excited to just keep on going."

Wong is one of those young players. The Hawaii Baptist student started two games late last year, but has been a staple in the lineup this season.

"He loves the game," Smock said of Wong. "He tries to have fun as much as he can, but when he's out there he gives it everything he's got."

Wong and the Wolf Pack take on Mid-Pacific Tuesday and wrap up the regular season with games against Iolani and Damien next week.

"We just have to finish as strong as we can," Smock said. "I'm sure the kids will give it everything they can because we're not often in this situation."

Female Athlete of the Week: Keau Fey, Punahou basketball
The emergence of the Punahou girls' basketball team as frontrunner in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu can be tied directly to the emergence of Keau Fey.

Fey, a senior center, posted a Herculean effort Saturday in the Buffanblu's 53-35 win over Iolani. She scored a season-high 12 points with 17 rebounds and seven blocks to keep her team atop the ILH Division I standings with two games to play.

"I think it shows that she's maturing in the game of basketball," Punahou coach Kevin Velasco said of Wong, who also plays volleyball and water polo. "She's becoming a real big force in the post area. Whatever the total was, it's phenomenal for one person to get that many rebounds."

The 6-foot-1 Fey has been on the varsity team for four years. She played her freshman season on the junior varsity before being called up for the postseason.

"I think initially out of the blocks, she was a better defensive player, but as the season has progressed, she has taken everything that the coaches have asked and she's become a force on the offensive side of the ball," Velasco said. "Her game has really grown on both ends of the court."

Fey's progression, coupled with the strong play of sophomore Tyra Moe, gives the Buffanblu a tough inside presence.

"We look to Keau, as we do Tyra, to give us that 1-2 scoring punch inside," Velasco said. "That's what I was looking for when I sat and talked with Keau in our conference. I'm not surprised, but I'm just appreciative and happy of what's transpired so far with the two for them and what the season has brought so far."

The season started off on the wrong foot with a 10-point loss to Maryknoll in the ILH opener back on Dec. 18. Since then, Punahou has reeled off seven consecutive wins and has a one-game lead over both Maryknoll and Kamehameha.

"It was very beneficial to not only the kids, but for the coaching staff," Velasco said of the loss to the Spartans. "We watched a lot of film to see what we needed to work on and what Maryknoll did to us to exploit some of our weaknesses at the time. I think that loss was a great thing for us because it took us back into the gym and gave the kids motivation to work harder and bring this team together."

The Buffanblu, who have not qualified for the state tournament the past two seasons, conclude the regular-season at Sacred Hearts Tuesday and against Kamehameha Thursday.
