University High came out strong shutting out 'Iolani in the first quarter 17-0, and didn't look back, posting a 41-29 win over Iolani II in an afternoon game at Klum Gym.
"It was a good feeling. Normally it would be tight all the way (playing against Iolani II), but this time I was confident that our team would win because this had never happened before," said Brooke Kodama. University High's energy continued into the second quarter as they broke through 'Iolani's full court press, and despite stretches playing without Markayisha Masani, who had to come out of the game as a result of foul trouble in the second quarter.
Masani would not return until 6:04 in the third quarter, but had to depart again after picking up her fourth foul with 2:12 left in the third.
"Once Ksha (Masani) got into foul trouble it was a good thing we had that mind set coming into the game to make sure we play together as a team. Once you lose your best player everyones roles get magnified," remarked University's head coach Brian Nakamura. With Masani - who leads the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II in scoring - down, University leaned on the seniors on the team.
Senior Brooke Kodama finished the game with 12 points, 2 rebounds, 3 fouls, 1 assist and 2 steals leading her team along with Michelle Au scoring 10 points to compliment her 8 rebounds. Out of Kodama's 12 points, 9 were from the three-point line.
"I feel this was the best game we played as a team because normally we would not run anything. We found the open man and we scored," said Kodama.
"The seniors no doubt stepped up especially the three seniors that we gave major playing time. Those girls stepped up big time for us and it's fitting because it's senior night," said Nakamura, "With Ksha in foul trouble if it wasn't for the seniors this game probably would have gotten away."
Masani ended the game with 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 fouls, and 4 blocks. 'Iolani's Amnesty Dawson lead her team with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
