Saint Louis to face 'Iolani in must-win contest

The only meeting of ranked teams this weekend will take place Friday night at Aloha Stadium when Saint Louis, who is tied for seventh in this week's ScoringLive/OC-16 Football Power Rankings, takes to the field against No. 9 'Iolani.

The game, which will kickoff around 7:45 p.m., will follow the 5 p.m. game between fifth-ranked Kamehameha and Pac-Five. Also in the ILH Friday, winless Damien visits No. 4 Punahou in a 3:15 p.m. game at Alexander Field.

All 10 teams in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation are in action this weekend and Kamehameha-Hawaii puts its undefeated record on the line at Ka'u while Hilo and Waiakea will battle for bragging rights at Francis Wong Stadium Friday night.

In the Maui Interscholastic League, old rivals Maui and Baldwin renew their rivalry at Wailuku's War Memorial Stadium Friday night.

Here is a look at those games:

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

Damien at No. 4 Punahou, Friday, 3:15 p.m.

The Monarchs (0-4 overall, 0-2 ILH) will have the odds stacked against them when they visit Alexander Field Friday afternoon. The Buffanblu (5-1, 2-0) look to be improving with each week and are coming off a huge 35-0 shutout of Saint Louis last Friday. Quarterback Larry Tuileta threw 2 TD passes and ran in a 1-yard score while running back Steven Lakalaka punched in a pair of scores on the ground.

The Buffanblu defense, led by 6-foot-7 defensive end DeForest Buckner, has allowed opponents an average of just 7.7 points per game. They forced four turnovers by Saint Louis, including an interception in their own end zone to end a scoring threat. Punahou and Kamehameha meet next week in a battle of unbeatens in the ILH Division I race.

Damien had a bye last week and last played on Sept. 9, in a 51-7 loss to Kamehameha. The Monarchs, who have 27 sophomores listed on their roster, have been outscored 158 to 14 through four games this season, their first under Damien alum and former University of Hawaii standout Eddie Klaneski.

No. 5 Kamehameha vs. Pac-Five at Aloha Stadium, Friday, 5 p.m.

After losing their first two games, the Warriors (3-2, 2-0) have turned it around, beating Radford, Saint Louis and Damien to get above .500. Kamehameha is coming off a bye week, but hopes to keep the momentum going against the Wolf Pack (3-2, 0-2) who are going in the opposite direction.

Pac-Five cracked the SL/OC-16 Football Power Rankings in week 4 after an 0-3 start, but has since dropped games against Saint Louis on Sept. 9 and 'Iolani last Friday. Its defense, which had shutout its first three opponents, has allowed 51 points in its two losses since, but held tough against the four-time defending Division II state champions. The Wolf Pack allowed one TD pass and two field goals by 'Iolani, but committed five turnovers in the loss.

Reece Alvarado and Jack Foster split time at quarterback for Pac-Five, which employs a ball-control, three running-back offense. Junior Alakai Kealoha ran for 110 yards last week and leads the squad for the season with 245 yards (4.7 per rush) and two touchdowns.

No. 7 Saint Louis vs. No. 9 'Iolani at Aloha Stadium, Friday, 7:45 p.m.

The Crusaders (4-2, 1-2) need to win this one to stay in the ILH Division I race - and for their morale. Saint Louis has lost two of its last three - a 28-21 nail-biter to Kamehameha on Sept. 2 and a 35-0 rout at the hands of Punahou Friday - and is behind both teams in the standings.

"We're down, but we're not out," head coach Darnell Arceneaux said following the loss to the Buffanblu. "I feel for the boys because they're out there working hard and giving it their all everyday, but we're going to continue to work and try and fix our mistakes."

'Iolani (4-2, 2-1) will be the first of two Division II opponents for the Crusaders, who has a bye next week before a game against Damien on Oct. 8. Arceneaux hopes several players - including defensive lineman Paula Kava, wide receiver/punter/kicker Aaron Goo and running back Kamana Pimental - heal up before their final two regular-season games: Oct. 21 vs. Kamehameha and the following week against Punahou.

The Raiders were held to a season-low 129 yards of total offense last week, but still managed to come away with a 13-3 win over Pac-Five Friday. Jordan Lee kicked two field goals and Sheldon Gallarde hauled in the only TD pass of the game from Reece Foy for 'Iolani, which is in sole possession of first place in the ILH Division II standings.

BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Hilo vs. Waiakea at Francis Wong Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

Records are out the door whenever these two cross-town rivals meet. The Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-1 BIIF) appear to be the better team right now, while the Vikings (0-5, 0-2) are still searching for victory No. 1 on the year. Waiakea allowed 24 third-quarter point in a 48-13 loss at Kealakehe Saturday. Hilo took one on the chin against Kea'au, 41-13, Saturday. The Vikings allowed 246 yards against the Cougars, who rushed for 181 in the win.

Kamehameha-Hawaii at Ka'u, Friday, 7 p.m.

The Warriors (6-0, 3-0) are the lone unbeaten on the Big Island and just outside of the SL/OC-16 Football Power Rankings, while the Trojans (0-3, 0-2) have scored just eight points against 159 allowed this season. Last week Kamehameha-Hawaii roughed up Honoka'a, 42-7, while Ka'u was on the wrong side of a 41-0 decision against Konawaena. Warriors' quarterback Warner Shaw threw three touchdown passes against the Dragons.

Konawaena at Kohala, Saturday, 2 p.m.

The Wildcats (4-1, 2-1) are in second place of the BIIF's Division II standings while the Cowboys (0-3) are in last. Isaiah Chinen had 124 rushing yards and two TDs in Konawaena's 41-0 smashing of Ka'u Friday. The Wildcats also returned a pair of fumbles for scores and blocked a punt that led to another against the Trojans. Kohala has allowed 141 points by its opponents and has scored just 38 in its three games.

Kea'au at Kealakehe, Saturday, 6 p.m.

The Cougars (1-4, 1-1) will make the long trip to the Kona-side of the Big Island for the Saturday showdown. Kea'au snapped a streak of four losses to open the season with its 41-13 win over Hilo Saturday, in which running back Johnny Vance ran for 116 yards on 10 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run. The Waveriders (4-1, 2-0) are winners of their last three contests after a 16-13 loss to Kamehameha-Hawaii back in week 2.

Hawaii Prep at Honoka'a, Saturday, 6 p.m.

Ka Makani (3-2, 2-1) pounded Kohala Saturday, 63-8, and smashed Ka'u a week ago, 55-8. HPA averages over five touchdowns (36.8) points per game and allows just over two (14.4) TDs on average. The Dragons (3-3, 1-1) are coming off a 42-7 road loss at Kamehameha-Hawaii Friday. A week after rushing for 321 yards and six TDs in a 66-24 win at Kohala, running back Hao Faumuina was held to 46 yards on 10 carries by the Warriors.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Maui vs. No. 7 Baldwin at War Memorial Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

The schools from neighboring communities will renew their rivalry at War Memorial Stadium Friday night. The Sabers (1-3 overall, 1-2 MIL) have lost their last two games after a 28-27 win at Kamehameha-Maui on Aug. 27. After a season-opening 48-10 loss to Edison (Calif.), the Bears (3-1, 3-0) have rolled through league play, outscoring opponents, 124 to 7, in three MIL games.

Kamehameha-Maui vs. Lahainaluna at War Memorial Stadium, Saturday, 7 p.m.

The MIL's only Division II teams square off in Wailuku Saturday. The Lunas (3-2, 2-1) have recorded wins over two of the league's Division I teams (22-0 at King Kekaulike last month and 29-10 over Maui Friday) while the Warriors (1-3, 1-2), who are coming off a bye week, also beat King Kekaulike, but lost to Maui and Baldwin.

KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Kapa'a vs. Waimea at Hanapepe Ballpark, Saturday, 3 p.m.

The Warriors (4-1 overall, 2-0 KIF) played Kaua'i to a 7-6 score into the 4th quarter, a game that was suspended and will only be played if the result has a bearing on the KIF title. John Das' 44-yard scoring pass to Reece Hickes-Whetsel in the second quarter was the lone Kapa'a touchdown and TJ West's extra point was the difference against the Red Raiders. Waimea (3-1, 1-1) had the week off. This is the first of two consecutive meetings between the teams in as many weeks.
