HONOLULU – It was a highlight reel kind of night for the future Bruin.

Kevon Looney, a 6-foot-10 UCLA commit, dazzled all those in attendance Wednesday night, to help Milwaukee Hamilton (WI) blitz Moanalua, 83-48.  Looney shot at a 66 percent clip, finishing with a double double of 25 points and 11 rebounds.  He also knocked down a trey and added three assists and four blocked shots.

“(He’s) is our leader, a phenomenal player,” Wildcats coach Randy Williams said.  “He can run the (point), he can play down in the low post.  We have options with him; he just makes us tough.”

Danya Kingsby was also solid for the Wildcats, posting 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Wildcats are making their first appearance in the 30th annual ‘Iolani Prep Basketball Classic.  They will move into the quarterfinal round and will face Westchester (CA) Thursday, who defeated Kamehameha 70-34.

“We’re really thankful to be here,” Williams said on playing in the tournament.  “My team needed this (win); we came in here off a loss.  We needed to get that off our chest and play hard.”

“It was good for our team, getting a win,” added Looney.  “We’re coming together as a team more.  Each game we’re getting better and better.  It was nice to get a win and get some energy going.”

One big key for the Wildcats’ victory was dominating the rebounding battle.  Hamilton commanded a 51-15 advantage on the glass, with 25 of those coming a Wildcat miss.

“That’s a strong emphasis of our team,” Looney said on the rebounding battle.  “Everytime we go out (in) every game, we make sure to rebound the ball.  That’s one of our strengths.  If we’re winning that battle then we should be good in the game.”

Leading the strong effort on the glass for the Wildcats was Jhmand Norwood, who finished with a game-high 16 rebounds, to go along with his 14 points and one steal.

“That’s my Dennis Rodman,” Williams said on Norwood.  “He has to do the dirty work for me and the team, and he does a great job at it.”

Hamilton was hot out of the gates, starting the game with a 13-0 run thanks to Looney’s six first quarter points.  That quick start helped the Wildcats end the first quarter with a 19-5 advantage.   Na Menehune had a rough start to the game, shooting for only 13 percent in the first quarter.

After Kingsby hit two quick free throws to start the second quarter, Looney took flight, getting two alley-oop dunks off the feed from Jalen Addison.  The second of the two dunks was the most spectacular, with Addison passing it off the backboard to a trailing Looney to make the score 25-5.

“I got set up pretty good from my teammates,” Looney said on his many dunks.  “Jalen Addison threw a couple of great lobs to me (that) I caught and finished.”

Moanalua got into the offensive flow later in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, but they still trailed at the half, 38-18.

A bright spot for Na Menehune was the play of Jamaal Willis, scoring 20 points with two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.  Aaron Stuart added 13 points and four rebounds to complement Willis.

Hamilton tips off against the Comets in the night game of the quarterfinal round while Moanalua will face Kamehameha in the consolation bracket.

“It’s been a great experience so far,” Looney said on the opportunity to play in Hawai’i and in the ‘Iolani Classic.  “I’ll never forget this experience.  It’s just a great memory that I can tell my kids and whole family about it one day.”
