WAILUKU, Maui - Farrington closed an emotional week by beating Baldwin, 21-3, Friday night in an opening round game of the First Hawaiian Bank Division I state football tournament.

The Governors (9-3), fifth in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, beat the Bears (6-5) for the first time in four tries in the state opening round on Maui before crowd of about 2,000 at War Memorial Stadium.

Farrington will play Punahou in the semifinals Friday at Aloha Stadium.

The game was played with heavy hearts by the Governors, still thinking of the loss of teammate Dayne Ortiz, a senior cornerback, who has been missing off Mokuleia since last Saturday while fishing with family members.

"We had to play for our brother Dayne," Farrington senior quarterback Montana Liana said. "Just to make him smile. (We had to) play as one team, one family."

Ortiz's older brother, Darren Ortiz, and cousin Brandon Rodrigues, who lives on Maui, were part of the coin toss as representatives of the Oritz family. Also, a moment of silence was observed before the kickoff.

"It was very emotional," Liana said. "We had that moment of silence. I just closed my eyes and I thought of him. I just thought of all the highlights he had with this team. It made me smile and motivated me to play hard for him."

Because of the incident, the Governors did not have their usual practices. But Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said he was not worried.

"The message for us was mental," Okimoto said. "Mental preparation. Mistakes we made last week, from Kahuku to Kapolei to Campbell and executing and going back to Mililani and reverting back to Kamehameha from the beginning of the season. That sent us a message that everything was mental. We didn't have much practice."

"We didn't really do much because of brother Dayne," Farrington tailback Sanele Lavatai said. "We had a lot going on for him. We even went to the beach where he (was lost), so we were practicing on the beach."

Tailback Sanele Lavatai had 107 yards on 16 carries, including a 9-yard TD run, all in the first half. He said he hurt his shoulder in last week's OIA championship against Mililani and didn't play in the second half.

It didn't matter. Sitaleki Hufanga picked up the slack 83 yards on 15 carries, including a 7-yard TD run, and Liana was 14 of 27 for 196 yards to keep the chains moving and milking the clock. Jacob Baguio had eight catches for 115 yards, including a 12-yard TD catch.

After taking the opening kickoff, Farrington punted after three downs to the Baldwin 48. Six plays and 30 yards later, Ricky Casco's booming 43-yard field gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with 7:17 in the first quarter.

The Bears would not be heard from again.

Casco's ensuing kickoff went for a touchback, but the Governors used Lavatai for six rushes, accounting for 56 yards on the eight-play drive that he capped with his 9-yard TD run. Kekoa Sasaoka's PAT gave Farrington a 7-3 lead with 4:28 in the first quarter.

The Govs added to their lead late in the half after Baldwin managed only an 11-yard punt to the Bears' 32. Farrington needed six plays and scored on Liana's 12-yard TD pass to Jacob Baguio to make it 14-3 with 32 seconds in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Farrington put the game away on Hufanga's 7-yard TD run with 3:49 left in the game to make it 21-3.

The Governors' defense got interceptions from Jacob McEnroe, Roger Boyd and Manly Williams. It also got sacks from Breiden Fehoko, Alu Taito and Moalatoutai Heimuli.

"It was emotional for us and emotional for them," Baldwin coach Keneke Pacheco said. "It took a little bit getting started. But I'm pleased with my young men. We're going to enjoy that. We're going to use that as a springboard for next year."

He was referring to starting sophomore QB Taje Akaka-Foster, who didn't start during the regular season, but started against Saint Louis in a non-league game in August.

"Any time you can get these young men playing at the state level, it's a great thing," Pacheco said. "For them, it's experience. A couple of them got one more year, some of them got two more years out on the field."
