KEAAU, Hawaii — Isaac Hurd did it again.

The senior quarterback accounted for five of his team's six touchdowns to lead Campbell to a 42-27 win over Hilo in a first-round game of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Football State Championships Friday night.

A crowd of 1,500 fans at Keaau's Cougar Stadium saw the Sabers, the Oahu Interscholastic Association's third-place team, improve to 9-3 and advance into next week's semifinal round, where they will play tournament second-seed Mililani. The Big Island Interscholastic Federation-champion Vikings saw their nine-win streak snapped and their season end with a 10-2 record.

"I just want to say God is good," said Hurd, who totaled 400 yards of total offense. "He brought us this whole way and now we have another opportunity to show ourselves to the state and I believe that if we focus and we execute then we can come out with a win."

Hurd completed 27 of 36 pass attempts — without an interception — to seven different receivers. He threw second-quarter scoring strikes of 38 and 11 yards to Amosa Amosa, Jr. and added touchdown passes of 23 and 39 yards in the second half. Hurd overcame three fumbles lost, including two that led to 10 Hilo points.

"During the game we had a lot of turnovers — a lot of them were my fault — but coach (Amosa Amosa) was just telling us that we had to keep our heads and keep our cool because the minute we start getting down on ourselves, we take ourselves out of the game," said Hurd, who also scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Hilo tied the game at 14 early in the third quarter on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Sione Atuekaho to Donavan Faoa Kelley, just one play after Hurd was stripped by the Vikings' John Salzman. Michael Williams recovered the loose ball at the Hilo 30-yard line and Kelley, who split time between quarterback and wide receiver, beat the Campbell defensive back down the left sideline on the next play.

Hurd fumbled for a third time two drives later while scrambling for a first down. Hilo's Suwaiter Poch covered up the Campbell fumble near midfield and eight plays later, Rayce Takayesu converted a 31-yard field goal to put the Vikings up 17-14 with three minutes and 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We didn't know that Hilo was going to be this tough, but we did know that Hilo was tough as the champions of the Big Island," said wide receiver Kainoa Perry, who finished with game-highs of nine receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. "We just started off slow offensively, but we got a big inspirational speech from coach Amosa picking us up, keeping our heads up. He said that still had a lot of football left and we still have an opportunity to come back and win this game, so we just kept believing."

Less than three minutes later, Campbell reclaimed a 21-17 lead on a 23-yard Hurd-to-Perry touchdown pass that was followed by the PAT by Bryson Maximo. Hilo went three-and-out on its ensuing drive and five plays later, Hurd found Jayce Bantolina for a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Hilo again went three-and-out and Hurd capitalized on a short field four plays later with his 13-yard scamper to paydirt. Maximo tacked on the extra point to extend the Sabers' lead to 35-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

Solomon Matautia closed out the Campbell scoring with a 58-yard punt return to make it 42-17.

Hilo scored the game's final 10 points on a safety when a low snap to Sabers' punter Abiel Taito led to an intentional grounding penalty in his own end zone and Shelton Lerma pulled down a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kelley in the closing minutes.

"I kept telling them that we had to do it for our defense — our defense they do so much for us, they give us so much opportunities so we just had to help them out," said Hurd, who factored into all four of Campbell's scores in a 28-7 win over Kahuku last week. "It's a partnership — they help us out, we've got to help them out and we came out with a win."

Hilo took a 7-0 lead on an 11-yard first-quarter touchdown run by Kelley. Campbell took a 14-7 lead into halftime following a pair of touchdown throws from Hurd to Amosa, Jr.

Kelley finished 5-of-10 passing for 102 yards and running back Tristan Spikes had 82 yards on 15 carries. The Vikings were just 1 of 12 on third downs.

Tristan Ludiazo recorded four tackles, including a sack and forced a fumble to lead the Sabers' defense.

"It feels amazing," said Ludiazo, a junior defensive lineman. "We just came together and we just stuck to it. We didn't get off to a very good (start) due to a lack of focus in the beginning, but I think after the first couple series we woke up and everybody came together and we really showed together what we can do when we're at our best."

It was the first Division I state-tournament appearance for the Sabers, who previously qualified for two D2 tournaments and won a state championship in 2004.

Hilo, which was making its return to the state tournament for the first time since 2003, dropped to 0-3 overall. No team from the Big Island has won a D1 state-tournament game since its inception in 1999.
