MILILANI — A changing of the guard took place Saturday night in Central Oahu.

Isaac Hurd factored into all four of his team's scores to help Campbell to a 28-7 win over Kahuku in the third-place game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament. A crowd of about 3,000 at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium saw the Sabers improve to 8-3 in securing their first-ever Division I state-tournament berth.

The Red Raiders, who have won the past two D1 state tournaments, saw their up-and-down season end on a low note. They failed to qualify for states for the first time since 2010, when they forfeited due to the use of an ineligible player, and close 2013 with a 6-5 record.

"I'm so proud of my boys, proud of my varsity team, proud of our program and the way the boys played tonight," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said.

Hurd, a senior quarterback, accounted for 210 yards of total offense. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 169 yards and rushed for 41 yards on 14 carries. Hurd threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Amosa Amosa Jr., who finished with game-highs of five receptions for 58 yards, and ran in scores from 4, 1 and 10 yards out.

"We're blessed to have him — he operated our well offense tonight," Amosa said. "We're still doing some mistakes here and there, but overall tonight, we did a lot of good things, we got some points on the board to get us to win tonight."

The win was especially redeeming considering the way the Sabers last contest went. They mustered a season-low 119 yards of total offense in a 7-0 semifinal loss to Farrington last week.

"We knew we couldn't get down, we just had to come back," said Hurd, who has scored thrown 19 touchdowns and rushed for 13 more on the season. "We knew we had a great opportunity. Coach was talking about how we could make history tonight, so we just put our trust in God and we did what we were doing all season — just working hard and striving for a win. We give all the glory to God always."

Campbell will travel to the Big Island for a opening-round game against Hilo Friday. The winner will play OIA-champ and tournament No. 2-seed Mililani in the semifinals.

"All week we talked about fine-tuning our offense and our defense, getting some points on the board to help our defense because they've been playing lights out the past few games, so it's nice to see us get some points on the board," Amosa said. "We made it to states, so this is a historic day for the Campbell Sabers' program."

The Kahuku offense struggled to find any kind of continuity. The Red Raiders gained just 67 rushing yards and quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi completed just 36 percent of his passes (16 of 44) for 143 yards. He was intercepted three times — once each by Campbell's David Alcos IV, Alexander Roldan and John Lagon — two of which the Sabers recycled for scores.

"Hats off to Campbell — they played tough, they're a good team," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "The (Red) West was tough this year and it showed. Campbell came out and played a better game than us and scored more points, so I'm proud of Amosa and his boys, they're doing a great job there."

The Sabers drew first blood with two minutes and 21 seconds left in the first quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Hurd to Amosa Jr., who split a pair of Red Raider defenders on the post route. The play was set-up by a 9-yard, third-down pass from Hurd to Kainoa Perry and a 16-yard connection from Hurd to Jayce Bantolina on consecutive plays. Bryson Maximo kicked the extra point to give the Sabers a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter.

Late in the second quarter, Kahuku put together a 13-play, 62-yard drive that was capped by Wily-Matagi's 4-yard touchdown pass to Kuuliko Carvalho on fourth-and-goal. Jake Samsel tacked on the PAT to tie it at 7 with 36 seconds left in the first half. The score held until halftime.

Campbell orchestrated a 13-play, 83-yard drive on its first possession of the second half that resulted in Hurd's 4-yard touchdown run off a boot leg to the left. The scoring play was the second fourth-down conversion of the Sabers' drive, which took six minutes and 29 seconds off the clock.

Late in the third quarter, Alcos IV picked off a Wily-Matagi pass to give Campbell possession at the Kahuku 21-yard line. To make matters worse for the Red Raiders, standout defensive end Lamone Williams was hurt on the very next play with an apparent left ankle injury. He did not return to the game.

Six plays later — on just the third play of the fourth quarter — Hurd snuck in from one yard out on another fourth-and-goal for his first rushing touchdown. The Sabers were 3 of 3 on fourth-down conversions for the game. Hurd caught the ensuing two-point conversion pass from Kainoa Perry to give Campbell a 21-7 lead.

A few drives later, Kahuku's drive ended in another Wily-Matagi interception — this time by Roldan, who picked off the pass at the Sabers' 43-yard line and returned it 44 yards deep into Kahuku territory.

Three plays later, Hurd found the end zone one final time on a 10-yard keeper up the middle with 6:20 left to play. Maximo tacked on the PAT to close out the scoring.

The game was delayed about 40 minutes with 4:08 left in the third quarter when Carvalho took a jarring hit after coming across the middle on a Kahuku pass attempt. Television replays showed the back of Carvalho's head slamming into the turf after the initial hit. Athletic trainers from both teams tended to him until paramedics arrived. As Carvalho was taken off the field and into the ambulance on the gurney, he gave a thumbs-up to his teammates and the crowd.

"You never can regroup from something like that — I mean, you're talking about one of our most inspirational players, a kid who's just not afraid to go over the middle," Torres said. "You know, our kids are crying. It was hard, but we tried to get them to refocused. I'm proud of my kids, they played through it, but that's not the reason that we lost. Campbell just played better than us."
