At last, Mililani celebrated its football championship where it should: On the field.

The Trojans dominated all phases in beating Farrington, 37-6, Friday night to capture their second O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red championship, but their first at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

In 2010, Mililani didn't even have to show up, as it was awarded the title when Kahuku had to forfeit for using an ineligible player.

"The 2010 team, we won by default," senior linebacker/running back Dayton Furuta said. "In our heart, it didn't feel like we deserved the win."

Friday night, the Trojans (10-1), ranked second in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Division I Power Rankings, proved they were the best with their 10th consecutive win after losing to top-ranked Punahou in the non-league season opener in August. The No. 5 Governors (8-3) were looking for their first title since their coach, Randall Okimoto, played in 1990, when he was an all-state junior running back.

"I didn't think that we were not going to be that good," he said. "I expected Mililani to be as good as they are, but I didn't think we were going to come out as flat as we did."

Sophomore quarterback McKenzie Milton turned a different kind of hat trick, by contributing to the scoring with a passing, rushing and receiving touchdowns. He was 9 of 11 for 77 yards passing, had 88 yards rushing and 23 yard receiving for 188 yards of total offense.

The other sophomore sensation, running back Vavae Malepeai, led with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries, including a 3-yard TD run.

But Furuta's might have been the most special, when he scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to put the game in the running-clock mode with five minutes, 10 seconds left in the third quarter. He had missed the previous two playoff games with injuries. He had been like the heart and soul of the team with his hard-nosed play on both sides of the ball.

"The past two weeks, I've been on the sidelines," said Furuta, who also had seven tackles, including a sack. "Knowing I can lead by example is a good feeling again."

Defensively, the Trojans contained Farrington to 183 yards, including only 82 on the ground. Running back Sanele Lavatai had 62 yards on 19 carries. Six times he was tackled for lost yardage.

"Our main plan was to shut down the run," Trojans' linebacker Keli'i Padello said. "They have a great running game and we wanted to get them out of that comfort zone, make them pass.

Even special teams contributed with a field goal and long punt and kickoff returns that set up TDs.

The Trojans' offense were in sync, scoring on six of its first seven series in building a 37-0 lead, initiating the mercy-rule running clock with 5:10 in the third quarter. The clock reverted to regular mode when Farrington scored its only TD of the game when Aaron Kesi returned a fumble 72 yards with 5:06 left in the game.

Farrington received the opening kickoff, but punted after three plays. The Trojans took over from their 47 and took the lead on Marc Matas' 29-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 7:17 left in the first quarter.

Farrington punted again after its next series. This time, the Trojans started at their 20, but six plays later, Milton scrambled out of pressure and scored on a 52-yard run. But Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo blocked the PAT to keep it 9-0 with 1:11 in the first quarter.

The Govs punted yet again after its third series. This time the Trojans didn't score because Milton was intercepted by Jacob McEnroe a the Farrington 6. Still, Farrington punted again, but Mililani had excellent field position starting at its 41. Five plays later - with the aid of two penalties totaling 24 yards - the Trojans scored on Malepeai's 3-yard run. This time, Manly Williams blocked the PAT to keep the score 15-0 with 4:30 in the half.

In keeping with the first-half theme, Farrington punted after its ensuing series. Kainoa Wilson's 42-yard punt return to the Farrington 28 set up Milton's 23-yard TD reception from Robert Faleafine, whose pass to Ian Namu on the 2-point conversion made it 23-0 with 25 seconds left in the half.

"Rob made a beautiful throw," Milton said. "He put it where it needed to be."

Malepeai returned the second-half kickoff 56 yards to the Farrington 39, Four plays later, Milton hit Kalakaua Timoteo with a 24-yard TD pass, increasing Mililani's lead to 30-0 with 10:35 in the third quarter.

Following its first-half pattern, Farrington punted on its first series of the second half. The Trojans capped their scoring with Furuta's 3-yard TD run.

Milton might have ignited the Trojans offensively, but he knows the seniors were the glue that kept the team together.

"They're our leaders," Milton said. "Dayton Furuta, Ian Namu, Keli'i Padello. I mean, they're awesome. They're great leaders and they're my brothers."
