Saints, Buffanblu face off in key ILH showdown




The fifth- and sixth-ranked teams in the ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings will meet in the feature game of an Interscholastic League of Honolulu doubleheader Friday evening at Aloha Stadium.

Reigning ILH and Division I state champion Saint Louis takes on Punahou at 7:45 p.m. in a game that will follow a clash between upstart Pac-Five and four-time defending Division II state champion 'Iolani at 5 p.m.

Both games will be aired live on Starcomm Sports Radio on AM1500.

Also, on the Big Island this weekend, Waiakea makes the cross-island trek to Kealakehe and Honoka'a visits Kamehameha-Hawaii. The winners will get a leg up in the Division I and II BIIF standings, respectively.


INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU

No. 5 Saint Louis vs. No. 6 Punahou, Friday, 7:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium (AM1500)

The Crusaders (4-1 overall, 1-1 ILH) and Buffanblu (4-1, 1-0) are both coming off victories last week. Saint Louis ran away with a 38-7 decision over previously-unbeaten Pac-Five while Punahou topped 'Iolani, 38-18, in a matinee affair at Eddie Hamada Stadium.

Despite five turnovers against the Wolf Pack, Saint Louis jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Sophomore Adam Noga, who began the year as the third-team running back, filled in for starter Kamana Pimental and scored on runs of 44 and 4 yards. He finished with 12 carries for 70 yards. Quarterback Kawai-Mook Garcia was an efficient 17-of-22 passing for 228 yards in just two quarters of action. He threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran in another score from 12 yards out in a winning effort.

Punahou has won two straight after dropping a home contest against Campbell, 14-0, on Aug. 26. UCLA-bound running back Steven Lakalaka pounded out 162 rushing yards on 28 carries and scored twice in the win at 'Iolani. Sophomore quarterback Larry Tuileta also threw three touchdown passes to help carry the Buffanblu, whose defense has allowed an average of just 9.2 points through five games. Kicker Christian Fairbairn has converted five field goals and 13 extra points on the year.

Pac-Five vs. No. 9 'Iolani, Friday, 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium (AM1500)

The Wolf Pack (3-1, 0-1) lost their first game of the season, 38-7 to Saint Louis Friday. Although Pac-Five recorded five takeaways against the fifth-ranked Crusaders, it could only muster 132 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jack Foster was held to 10-of-25 passing for 100 yards and was picked off once. He was also sacked eight times by the Saint Louis defense. Defensive back Drew Viena had two interceptions in a losing effort last week.

The Raiders (3-2, 1-1) allowed 24 first-quarter points in a 38-18 loss against rival Punahou Friday. 'Iolani racked up 446 offensive yards against the Buffanblu - including 392 pass yards by quarterback Reece Foy - but he was also picked off four times. Dane Arakawa hauled in five catches for a game-high 113 yards for Iolani, but Punahou gained 6.7 yards per rush and scored five touchdowns to hold off the Raiders. 'Iolani plays back-to-back Division I opponents in Saint Louis and Kamehameha over the next two weeks.


BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Honoka'a at Kamehameha-Hawaii, Friday, 7 p.m.

The Dragons (3-2 overall, 1-0 BIIF) and Warriors (5-0, 2-0) will battle at Pai'ea Stadium for the lead in the BIIF's Division II race. Honoka'a, which beat Kohala, 66-24, Friday, relies heavily on its running game -namely running back Hao Faumuina - offensively. He ran wild for 321 yards and six touchdowns on 22 carries against Kohala. Quarterback Warner Shaw (508 pass yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs) leads the Warriors, who are the Big Island's last remaining undefeated team.

Hawaii Prep at Kohala, Saturday, 2 p.m.

Ka Makani (2-2, 1-1) scored 35 first-quarter points on their way to a 55-8 rout of Ka'u Saturday while the Cowboys (0-2) allowed nearly 400 yards in a 66-24 loss at Honoka'a Friday. HPA is tied for third with Konawaena - which has a bye this weekend - in the BIIF's Division II standings and visits rival Honoka'a next week before a showdown with league-leader Kamehameha-Hawaii on Oct. 1.

Hilo at Kea'au, Saturday, 5 p.m.

One of these teams will come away with its first win of the season, while the other will drop to 0-5. The Vikings (0-4, 0-1) were pounded by Kealakehe, 50-0, Saturday while the Cougars (0-4, 0-1) allowed 18 fourth-quarter points in a 30-24 loss to Waiakea Saturday. Hilo has struggled on both sides of the ball, having scored just 26 points while allowing 120 points this season. Kea'au has allowed an average of 272 yards per game by opponents.

Waiakea at Kealakehe, Saturday, 6 p.m.

The Warriors (2-1, 1-0) rallied past Kea'au Saturday and are tied atop the BIIF's Division I standings with the Waveriders (3-1, 1-0), who have steamrolled their past two opponents. Kealakehe, under first-year head coach Sam Kekuaokalani, beat Honoka'a, 63-10, two weeks ago and shutout Hilo, 50-0, Saturday. The Waveriders score just over 40 points per game and allow an average of 15 by opponents.


MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE

Lahainaluna vs. Maui, Friday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium

Both squads are hoping to bounce back from losses last week. The Lunas (2-2 overall, 1-1 MIL) managed just 76 yards in a 40-0 thrashing at the hands of Baldwin while the Sabers (1-2, 1-1 MIL) threw four interceptions in a 26-14 loss to King Kekaulike. Running back Jared Rocha averages 5.7 yards per carry, but Lahainaluna scores just 12 points per game and has been shut out twice already this season. Chastin Valdez leads Maui with 6.7 yards per rush attempt.

No. 8 Baldwin at King Kekaulike, Saturday, 7 p.m.

The Bears (2-1, 2-0) roughed up Kamehameha-Maui, 41-7, Friday and allowed just 122 offensive yards by the Warriors to remain as the lone unbeaten on the Valley Isle. Quarterback Keelan Ewaliko ran for 107 yards with two touchdowns and threw for two other scores in the win. Na Ali'i (1-3, 1-2) had 190 rushing yards and a pair of field goals from Michael Teves to snap a three-game losing streak with their 26-14 win over Maui Saturday.


KAUA'I INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION

Kapa'a vs. Kauai, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium

The Warriors (3-1 overall, 1-0 KIF) bested Waimea, 23-13, Saturday while the Red Raiders (1-2, 0-1) enjoyed a bye week. TJ West made field goals of 37, 28 and 31 yards and 6-foot, 230-pound Sendrick D'Sio ran in a couple scores in Kapa'a's win. The Warriors' have shown balance offensively, averaging 166 rushing yards per game and 164 passing. Kauai has averaged 350 yards through three games, but quarterback Trey Aguano has six thrown six interceptions - including five in a 28-7 loss to Waimea on Sept. 3 - against just two touchdowns.
