The road to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red football championship has gone through Kahuku in eight of the past 11 years.

Not this time.

The thoroughfare has been blocked by Mililani, which rolled over its nemesis of the past 10 seasons in postseason, 37-22, in a semifinal Thursday night at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. The Trojans (9-1), third in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, will meet Farrington for the Red title next Friday. The Governors lead the series, 7-3-1, but the Trojans have won two of the last three meetings in the OIA tournament, including last year's semifinals, 42-21.

The Red Raiders (6-4) will play Campbell for third place and the league's final Division I state berth next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Mililani.

It marked the first time the Trojans have beaten the Red Raiders, at least on the field. Kahuku owned a 10-1 record against Mililani since 1977, but its only blemish was when the Red Raiders forfeited the title game in 2010 for using an ineligible player.

Since 2004, the Red Raiders had beaten the Trojans twice in the championship (2004 and 2012) and twice in the quarterfinals (2008 and 2009).

"We don't look at it as we finally beat them," Mililani coach Rod York said. "We're just happy to get the win."

This will be the Trojans third on-field appearance in the title game.

There was no stopping the Trojans, who amassed 416 yards against a program that thrived on its defense. Super sophomores in running back Vavae Malepeai and quarterback McKenzie Milton accounted for 363 of those yards combined. Malepeai was a workhorse, rushing 30 times for 139 yards and Milton had 224 yards from 14-of-25 passing. Malepeai rushed for three TDs Milton passed for two. And it could've been worse. Milton had an apparent 69-yard TD pass to Ryan Reedy nullified by an ineligible receiver downfield penalty.

"I don't look at it that way," Milton said of being a sophomore in big game. "I just look at it as I am the quarterback. I have to lead my guys every week and hopefully we can get the win. But it feels awesome."

Milton's dual threat passing and running made it hard for the Red Raiders to spy an anyone one player, especially with Malepeai's running.

"They're awesome," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said "They're tough from both sides. Defensively, they're tough and they didn't even have their top linebacker (Dayton Furuta). Offensively, what do you stop? You try to stop the pass, Malepeai runs up inside of you. You try to contain Malepeai, the quarterback runs."

Defensively, the Trojans registered five sacks, four by Keli'i Padello. Jacob Afele led with 12 tackles.

The Trojans set the tone after taking the opening kickoff. They moved 58 yards on 14 plays, scoring on Marc Matas' 20-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead at 7:55 in the first quarter.

On its first series, Kahuku lost the ball on downs at the Trojans' 34. The Trojans wasted little time adding to their lead when Milton hit a wide-open Kainoa Wilson for a 60-yard TD pass to make it 10-0 with 2:22 in the first quarter.

The didn't score again until late in the first half when Malepeai scored from 14 yards to complete a nine-play, 80-yard drive to make it 17-0 at 2:26.

The Red Raiders woke up in time to score when tailback Soli Afalava scored on an 8-yard run with 1:24 to pull them to 17-7.

Mililani almost added to its lead, but Milton's 69-yard TD pass was nullified by the penalty. Matas missed a 32-yard field goal to end the half.

The Trojans picked up where they left off the first half. They inherited a short field after a 15-yard Kahuku punt to its 28. Five plays later, Malepeai scored on a 3-yard run to make it 24-7 at 9:07.

"You have to give it to the offensive linemen," Malepeai said. "You can't make it without them."

Down three scores, the Red Raiders took a time-consuming 18-play, 80-yard drive that lasted 7:28 with Polikapo Liua plunging into the end zone from the 1 with 1:39 in the third quarter to make it 24-14. Liua led Kahuku 132 yards rushing on 17 carries.

But Mililani added two more scores, first on Malepeai's third TD of the game on a 1-yard run with 9:12 in the fourth and on Milton's 25-yard TD pass to Reedy, which was set up by an interception from Ian Namu.

The Red Raiders made a last-hurrah when Tuli Wily-Matagi connected with Huleia Naeole on a 24-yard TD pass with 1:07 left in the game.
