No. 6 Waianae visits No. 8 Kahuku in OIA Red quarterfinal




Two of the most storied football programs in the Oahu Interscholastic Association will renew a classic rivalry Friday night on the North Shore.

Waianae, the sixth-ranked team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings and No. 3 seed out of the Red West, travels to No. 8 Kahuku, the Red East second seed, for a highly-anticipated quarterfinal game in the second week of the OIA Red Tournament.

Between them, the Seariders and Red Raiders have a combined 41 league championships. Waianae has won 18 OIA titles, but none since it won back-to-back in 1996 and 1997. Kahuku has a league-high 23 championships to its name, including the last two Red titles and eight in the last 10 years. The Red Raiders have also won the last two D1 state championships.

The winner will advance to the semifinals against the winner of Leilehua-Mililani next Thursday, while the loser's season is over.

The Seariders (7-2) and Red Raiders (5-3) are expected to kickoff about 7:30 p.m. at Carleton E. Weimer Field in the UHA Game of the Week.

RED CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
QUARTERFINALS
No. 6 Waianae vs. No. 8 Kahuku, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Carleton E. Weimer Field
The Seariders are coming off a 37-7 home win over Castle in last week's first round of the 12-team tournament. They rushed for 253 yards and five touchdowns with nine different ball carriers and built up a 21-0 lead at halftime and 35-0 lead after three quarters. The Red Raiders finished second in the Red East and had a first-round bye last week. Kahuku averages more than 223 yards rushing and 32.5 offensive points per game, but ran for just 88 yards (2.8 yards per rush) in a 21-7 loss to Farrington two weeks ago.

No. 9 Kapolei vs. No. 7 Farrington, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
The Hurricanes (6-3) got through the first round with a 42-27 home win over Kailua Friday to advance to play the Governors (6-2), the top seed out of the Red East. Kapolei, the Red West No. 4 seed, is led by running back Triston Pebria, who rushed for 111 yards and three first-half touchdowns against the Surfriders. Farrington had a bye last week after a 21-7 win over Kahuku in its regular-season finale on Oct. 3. The Govs and 'Canes have met four times since 2007 — all in the playoffs. Farrington has won all four games.

McKinley at No. 5 Campbell, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers (5-4) were the lone Red East team to win a first-round game last week. They defeated Waipahu, 36-15, in a home game Friday behind an spectacular individual effort from Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta. He passed for 204 yards with four touchdowns, recorded 11 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles against the Marauders. The Sabers (6-2) are the Red West No. 2 seed and were idle last week. They are led by quarterback Isaac Hurd, who has passed for 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns and has 355 rushing yards and eight more TDs on the year. Campbell ended McKinley's season with a 35-0 playoff win in 2012.

No. 10 Leilehua vs. No. 3 Mililani, Saturday, 6 p.m. at John Kauinana Stadium
The Mules (6-3) beat Moanalua, 54-17, on the road last week in a first-round game. Randy Neverson rushed for 182 yards and two scores to lead a rushing attack that netted 330 yards and five touchdowns against Na Menehune. Justin Jenks will be making his third consecutive start at quarterback for Leilehua, the fifth seed out of the Red West. The Trojans (7-1) meanwhile enjoyed a bye as the Red West top seed. They have won six straight and just three weeks ago, turned back the Mules, 44-14, at John Kauinana Stadium. Vavae Malepeai rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns for Mililani.

WHITE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
SEMIFINALS
Radford at Kaiser, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Rams (7-2) fell from second place a week ago to the No. 4 seed with their 7-6 loss to Pearl City, coupled with Kalani's 55-28 win at Waialua Friday. Radford, which averages over 41 points and 433 yards per game on offense, will be without two its playmakers on that side of the ball in wide receiver Jameson Pasigan (39 rec.-672 yds-13 TDs) and running back Tobias Powell (49 rush-491 yes-8 TDs) due to injuries. The Cougars (8-1) are coming off their second win by forfeit in four weeks and are the top seed after a perfect 8-0 record in the White.

Pearl City vs. Kalani, Friday, 7:30 p.m. at John Velasco Stadium
The Chargers (6-3) posted a big 7-6 upset of Radford a week ago to finish the regular season with a 6-2 mark and the No. 3 seed. Since a 40-8 loss against Kalani to open the White season back on Aug. 23, Pearl City won its next five games and six of seven. The Falcons (6-3) have won four straight and six of their last seven and will be making their postseason debut. Kalani's Noah Brum threw for 180 yards and four touchdown passes — two each to Enrique Gruver and Brandon Roberts — the first time the teams played.

INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE OF HONOLULU
DIVISION I POSTSEASON
SEMIFINAL
No. 4 Saint Louis vs. No. 2 Kamehameha, Saturday, 7:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Crusaders (6-2) lost to both Kamehameha (38-17 on Aug. 30) and Punahou (35-32 on Oct. 4) in the regular season and are the third seed. They haven't played a game since the loss to the Buffanblu because Saint Francis forfeited their scheduled match Friday. The Warriors' (8-1) only loss this season was against Punahou (24-0 on Sept. 14), but the Buffanblu are the only D1 opponent they have played in six weeks. Kamehameha scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally past Saint Louis in the teams' regular-season meeting.

DIVISION II POSTSEASON
SEMIFINALS
Saint Francis vs. Iolani, Saturday, 2 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Saints (1-7) have not played since Oct. 5, when they lost at Kamehameha, 61-26. They forfeited their regular-season finale against Saint Louis Friday due to a numerous injuries. Saint Francis, which went 0-6 in its debut varsity season in the ILH, is the fourth seed. The Raiders (5-4) have won the last six D2 state championships and are the No. 1 seed in the postseason. Jordan Ross rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries when Iolani beat Saint Francis, 35-0, on Aug. 30.

Pac-Five vs. Damien, Saturday, 4:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium
The Wolf Pack (1-7) are the third seed and have lost their last two games, including a 59-7 drubbing at the hands of Punahou Friday. Their only win came on Sept. 27, when they shutout Saint Francis, 37-0. The Monarchs (3-5) are on a three-game losing streak and are coming off a 65-0 loss at Kamehameha Saturday. Damien, the No. 2 seed, handed Pac-Five a 31-14 loss when the teams played on Aug. 30. Quarterback Syles Choy threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 78 yards and another score in the win.

BIG ISLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
DIVISION I TOURNAMENT
SEMIFINALS
Keaau vs. Hilo, Friday, 7 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium
The Cougars (1-6) are the fourth-seed in the four-team tournament while the Vikings (8-1) are the favorites to win it all. Keaau averages just over 7 points per game on offense and 23 defensively. It has been outscored 161 to 54 by opponents this season. Hilo has a seven-game win streak entering the playoffs, including back-to-back wins over Kealakehe and Konawaena. The Vikings have outscored league opponents 204 to 66 this year and beat the Cougars, 35-7, in their regular-season meeting back on Sept. 7.

Waiakea at Kealakehe, Saturday, 7 p.m.
The Warriors (3-7) are looking to catch fire and make a postseason run after having lost the straight games and five of their last six. Waiakea's only wins this season have come against the last-place teams in D1 (Keaau) and D2 (Honokaa). The Warriors, who average just 15.1 points offensively, are the No. 3 seed. The Waveriders (3-5) are in the unfamiliar position of second-place after a 3-4 regular season that included losses to three D2 opponents. Kealakehe beat Waiakea, 31-14, just two weeks ago at home.

DIVISION II TOURNAMENT
SEMIFINALS
Kamehameha-Hawaii at Hawaii Prep, Saturday, 3 p.m.
The Warriors (5-4) are the No. 3 seed while Ka Makani (7-2) earned the No. 2 seed and a home game this weekend. Both teams are coming off shutout victories in their respective regular-season finales last weekend. Kamehameha-Hawaii beat Keaau, 16-0, while HPA blanked Honokaa, 41-0. The teams played just two weeks ago at the Warriors' Paiea Stadium, with Ka Makani coming away with a 41-24 win. HPA has won three straight and five of their last six games.

MAUI INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE
Baldwin vs. Lahainaluna, Friday, 6:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium (TV: OC16)
The Bears (5-3 overall, 5-1 MIL) and Lunas (8-0, 6-0) have already clinched the MIL Division I and II championships, respectively. Baldwin won their last three games before a bye last week, while Lahainaluna is one of just two undefeated teams statewide and the lone D2 team with an unblemished record. Jared Rocha-Isalas and Makoa Filikitonga each rushed for at least 150 yards and a touchdown when the Lunas won the first time the teams played, 28-7, on Sept. 13.

Kamehameha-Maui vs. Maui, Saturday, 7 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium
The Warriors (1-7 overall, 1-6 MIL) will close out a rough first season under rookie coach Cody Nakamura. They are coming off a 35-0 shutout loss to Lahainaluna Saturday for their sixth straight loss. The Sabers (5-3, 3-3) rebounded from losses to Lahainaluna and Baldwin in consecutive weeks with a 49-20 win over King Kekaulike Friday. Elijah Tasini rushed for 242 yards with two touchdowns and Daniel Kelley added four TD runs in the win.

KAUAI INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION
Kapaa vs. Kauai, Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium
The Warriors (4-3 overall, 3-2 KIF) and Red Raiders (6-0, 4-0) have already played twice this season with Kauai winning both times by a combined four points. The Red Raiders came from behind to win 6-3 the first time they met back on Sept. 6 and followed that with a narrow 7-6 win just three weeks later. Kapaa is coming off a 41-7 rout of Waimea Saturday. Kauai, which had a bye last week, can clinch the KIF title with a win this weekend.
